2011–12 Munster Rugby Season
The 2011–12 Munster Rugby season was Munster's eleventh season competing in the Pro12, alongside which they also competed in the Heineken Cup. It was Tony McGahan's fourth and final season as Director of Rugby. Summary Munster were drawn in Pool 1 of the 2011–12 Heineken Cup alongside Scarlets, Northampton Saints and Castres. Munster defeated Northampton 23–21 in their opening pool fixture on 12 November 2011, thanks to an 84th minute drop-goal from Ronan O'Gara. One week later, away from home against Castres, a last-gasp drop-goal from O'Gara again handed victory to Munster, this time 27–24. In the December double-header against Scarlets, Munster emerged victorious from both fixtures, firstly defeating the Welsh side 17–14 in the away leg, before winning 19–13 at home. Thomond Park
Thomond Park is a stadium in Limerick in the Irish province of Munster. The stadium is owned by the Irish Rugby Football Union and has Munster Rugby, Shannon RFC and UL Bohemian RFC as tenants. Limerick FC played home games in Thomond Park from 2013 to 2015 in the League of Ireland while the Markets Field was being redeveloped. The capacity of the stadium is 25,600 following its large-scale redevelopment in 2008. History The stadium holds a special place in rugby due to its own unique history and atmosphere. Ulster Rugby
Ulster Rugby is one of the four professional provincial rugby teams from the island of Ireland. They compete in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup. John Ryan (rugby Union, Born 1988)
John William Ryan (born 2 August 1988) is an Irish rugby union player for Chiefs in Super Rugby. He plays as a prop. Early career From Berrings, Cork and educated at Christian Brothers College, Ryan played schools rugby for Christian Brothers and represented Munster at Schools, U19, U20 and Academy level. In 2010 and 2011, he also played for the International Club XV. Club career Munster Ryan joined the Munster senior squad in 2010–11. Wian Du Preez
Wian du Preez (born 30 October 1982) is a South African rugby union player, currently playing in France for . He plays as a prop, primarily at loosehead. Du Preez, a native of Free State, played for the Cheetahs from 2007 until 2010. After completing a loan-spell at Munster, he returned to the Cheetahs to play out the 2010 Super 14. Club career Du Preez first played for Munster in late 2009, after he was signed on a three-month loan as injury cover for Marcus Horan. He impressed during his short time there and, in May 2010, it was announced that Du Preez was returning to Munster after signing a two-year permanent contract. Marcus Horan
Marcus Horan (born 7 September 1977) is a retired Irish rugby union player who played prop for Munster and Ireland. Early life Horan was educated at Scoil Seanain Naofa (Clonlara National School), St. Munchin's College and Limerick Institute of Technology. The current Munster and Ireland prop Dave Kilcoyne is a cousin of Horan's. Munster Horan made his Munster debut in the 1999–00 season, and was part of the winning team that saw Munster crowned Europeans Champions in 2006. He managed to recover from a calf injury that he picked up in training six weeks prior to the final, and played a role in the Heineken Cup final, where Munster defeated Biarritz 23–19. John Hayes (rugby Union)
John James Hayes (born 2 November 1973) is a retired Irish rugby union player who played in the Pro12 and Heineken Cup for Munster. He didn't start playing rugby until he was 18; prior to this he played with the local Cappamore GAA hurling club. It was his size (6 ft 4 in, 19 stone) that enabled him to overcome his late start to the sport. He continues to "follow GAA in Limerick very much and especially hurling". Early rugby Hayes was introduced to the game of rugby union by friends when he joined local rugby club Bruff in County Limerick. He then moved up a grade when he joined Shannon before travelling to Invercargill, New Zealand, where he changed position from lock to prop because he had "bulked up". Brendon James Botha, better known as BJ Botha (born 4 January 1980) is a South African former rugby union player. He played as a prop. Professional career Sharks Botha played in the Currie Cup and Super 14 the Sharks. He played in all 13 Super 14 matches in 2006 and was one cap shy of a half-century in the domestic Currie Cup. Stephen Archer (born 29 January 1988) is an Irish rugby union player for Munster in the United Rugby Championship and European Rugby Champions Cup. He plays as a prop and represents Cork Constitution in the All-Ireland League. Damien Varley
Damien Varley (born 29 October 1983) is a former Irish rugby union player who represented Munster and Ireland. He played as a hooker. Varley was forced to retire from rugby in February 2015, due to a foot injury. Early life Varley was educated in a boarding school, St. Munchin's College in Limerick where he scored two tries as Munchin's won the Munster Schools Rugby Senior Cup final in 2002. Mike Sherry
Mike Sherry (born 18 June 1988) is an Irish former rugby union player. He played as a hooker and represented Garryowen in the All-Ireland League. Early life Sherry was born in Limerick, where he attended Ardscoil Rís and won the Munster Schools Junior Cup. Seán Henry (rugby Union)
Seán Henry (born 16 December 1987) is a former Irish rugby union player. He played as a hooker. Whilst at Munster, Henry played his club rugby with UL Bohemians. Connacht Being from Sligo, Henry's native province was Connacht, and he represented the team at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level, before switching to Munster. Munster Henry made his debut against Glasgow in September 2010.
