2011–12 CHL Season
The 2011–12 CHL season was the 20th season of the Central Hockey League (CHL). League business Team changes The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, Colorado Eagles (who moved to the ECHL), Mississippi RiverKings (who moved to the Southern Professional Hockey League), Bloomington PrairieThunder, and the Odessa Jackalopes all left the league. A new team, the Bloomington Blaze joined the league and will play in the Turner Conference. Realignment Announced on June 14, 2011, the league realigned their conferences with the loss of five teams and the addition of one team. The notable changes are the addition of Bloomington to the Turner Conference and Wichita Thunder to the Berry Conference. Central Hockey League
The Central Hockey League (CHL) was a North American mid-level minor professional ice hockey league which operated from 1992 until 2014. It was founded by Ray Miron and Bill Levins and later sold to Global Entertainment Corporation, which operated the league from 2000 to 2013, at which point it was purchased by the individual franchise owners. As of the end of its final season in 2014, three of the 30 National Hockey League teams had affiliations with the CHL: the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Several teams of defunct leagues joined the CHL along its history, including the Southern Hockey League, Western Professional Hockey League and International Hockey League. After two teams suspended operations during the 2014 offseason, the ECHL accepted the remaining seven teams as members in October 2014, meaning the end for the CHL after 22 seasons. Odessa Jackalopes (1997–2011)
The Odessa Jackalopes were a minor professional ice hockey team based in Odessa, Texas. The team played in the Central Hockey League (CHL), and was an affiliate of the New York Islanders. The Jackalopes played their home games at Ector County Coliseum. All Jackalopes games were broadcast live on KMCM from the franchise's inaugural year until the 2009–10 season when KFZX took over the broadcasting rights to the live games and the Monday talk show called Hockey Talk. History In October 1997, Odessa joined the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL). In their first season the home games drew an average of 4,000 spectators. Over the next couple of seasons that number leveled off, and the team averaged just over 3,200 hockey fans each game. The team mascot, a jackalope, quickly became one of the most popular in hockey's minor leagues, and team merchandise featuring the snarling, antlered rabbit, has sold well throughout the United States and Canada. Frankie DeAngelis
Frankie DeAngelis (born February 15, 1985) is a former Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Fort Wayne Komets of the East Coast Hockey League. He is currently the assistant coach of the OJHL North York Rangers. Hockey life Frankie started playing hockey in his hometown of Vaughan, Ontario. In his first year on the ice playing Pee-Wee, Frankie scored five goals in one game. In his early years he played for the Vaughan Kings AAA Ice Hockey club of the GTHL. Junior Hockey Frankie was recruited by the Vaughan Vipers of the OPJHL in 2001. He played defense for the team until the end of the 2002-03 season when he was picked up by the Georgetown Raiders. With Frankie's assistance on the blue line the team finished first overall in the 2003–04 and 2004-05 seasons, winning the championship and hosting the Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2005. Shawn Limpright (born July 6, 1981) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player. He most recently played with the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League (CHL). Dayton Gems (2009–2012)
The Dayton Gems were a minor professional ice hockey team based in Dayton, Ohio, in the Central Hockey League. The team was originally a member of the International Hockey League before it merged into the CHL in 2010. The team played their home games at the Hara Arena in nearby Trotwood. History The team was established in 2009 and joined the International Hockey League (IHL) for the 2009–10 season. The team was named after the original Dayton Gems of the former International Hockey League. Their acceptance into the IHL was officially announced on June 9, 2009. On June 15, 2009, the Gems named John Marks as head coach. Kevin McClelland
Kevin McClelland (born July 4, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was recently the head coach of the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL. Playing career As a youth, McClelland played in the 1975 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Oshawa. McClelland was drafted in the fourth round, 71st overall, by the Hartford Whalers during the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. The majority of his NHL career was served playing center ice with the Edmonton Oilers (1984–1989), with whom he won four Stanley Cups 1984-85-87-88. His most memorable playoff moment came in Game 1 of the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals when he scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over the New York Islanders. McClelland retired from the NHL following 588 games, recording a total of 68 goals, 112 assists, 180 points, and 1672 penalty minutes. Rapid City Rush
The Rapid City Rush are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL based in Rapid City, South Dakota, and play their home games at The Monument. The Rush are currently a minor affiliate of the Calgary Flames NHL franchise. History On June 2, 2007, the Central Hockey League announced an expansion team for Rapid City, which began play in the 2008–09 season. Two months later, the team named Joe Ferras as their head coach and director of hockey operations, and Jason Rent as general manager. Rent resigned from the organization, and Tim Hill was named general manager in the spring of 2009. In September 2007, the Rush unveiled their name, colors, and logo. The team is owned in majority by Scott Mueller. Mueller was previously involved in ownership with the Colorado Eagles, also of the Central Hockey League. Riley Weselowski
Riley Weselowski (born February 24, 1985) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who predominantly played in the ECHL. He is currently serving as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL. Playing career Weselowski made his professional debut with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL. In 2009, during his second season, he moved to Rapid City Rush. After six seasons with the Rush in the Central Hockey League and ECHL, Weselowski left the club as a free agent and signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Cyclones on September 17, 2015. After spending the 2015–16 season with the Cyclones, he returned to Rapid City on July 27, 2016, extending his record as the longest tenured player in club history . Texas Brahmas
The Fort Worth Brahmas were a professional ice hockey team in the Central Hockey League, and previously the Western Professional Hockey League. The team originally played at the Fort Worth Convention Center but played their final six seasons, including their 2008–09 Championship season at the NYTEX Sports Centre. The CHL officially announced the team was going inactive on June 16, 2013. History 1990s Originally announced as the Fort Worth Bulls but forced to change their name after the Birmingham Bulls objected, the team began play in the Western Professional Hockey League as the Fort Worth Brahmas (named after Brahma bulls) while the CHL's Fort Worth Fire were still in operation.
