2011 Samoan By-elections
Four simultaneous by-elections were held in Samoa on 29 July 2011. They followed on from the general election on 4 March, after which the results in several constituencies had been challenged. The Supreme Court voided * the election of Va'ai Papu Vailupe (of the Tautua Samoa Party) in the Vaisigano No.1 constituency due to bribery and treating, * the election of Alai'asa Filipo Schwartz Hunt (elected as an independent, but who had then joined the Human Rights Protection Party) in the Anoamaa East constituency due to corruption, * the election of Taua Kitiona Seuala (of the Human Rights Protection Party) in the Aleipata Itupa I Luga constituency due to corruption, and * the election of Tavu'i Tiafau Salevao (of the Human Rights Protection Party) in the Satupaitea constituency due to bribery and treating. By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. Taua Tavaga Kitiona Seuala (died April 2013) was a Samoan politician and Cabinet Minister. He was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Taua was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa in the 1996 election. he was re-elected in 2001 election. After being re-elected at the 2006 election he was appointed Minister of Agriculture. In November 2009 it was alleged that aid following the 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami was being directed to Taua's constituency at the expense of others. He was re-elected at the 2011 election but not reappointed to Cabinet. Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell
Lautafi Fio Selafi Joseph Purcell is a Samoan politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Purcell was educated at Chanel College, Moamoa and St Paul's College, Auckland as well as Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He subsequently worked as a prison manager, prison inspector and policy advisor for the New Zealand Department of Justice and Department of Corrections. Purcell was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa in a 2011 by-election, and appointed Associate Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. Following a Cabinet reshuffle in April 2014 he was appointed as the first Minister of Public Enterprises. He was re-elected unopposed at the 2016 Samoan general election and appointed Minister of Labour, Tourism and Samoa Land Corporation, as well as retaining his Government Enterprises portfolio. Amituanai Fagaivalu Kenrick Samu is a Samoan politician and member of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa. He is a member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Samu was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in a by-election in 2011. He was re-elected unopposed in the 2016 Samoan general election after his only rival was disqualified. The Legislative Assembly ( sm, Fono Aoao Faitulafono a Samoa), also known as the Parliament of Samoa ( sm, Palemene o Samoa), is the national legislature of Samoa, seated at Apia, where the country's central administration is situated.
