2011 Independence Bowl
The 2011 AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl, the 36th edition of the Independence Bowl, was a post-season American college football bowl game, held on December 26, 2011 at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana as part of the 2011–12 NCAA bowl season. The game's title sponsor was AdvoCare, an American dietary supplement company. The game, telecast at 4:00 p.m. CT on ESPN2, featured the Missouri Tigers from the Big 12 Conference versus the North Carolina Tar Heels from the Atlantic Coast Conference. This marked Missouri's third appearance in the Independence Bowl in the previous nine seasons, all under head coach Gary Pinkel, while North Carolina made its first appearance in this bowl. Independence Stadium (United States)
Independence Stadium is a stadium owned by the city of Shreveport, Louisiana and is the home of the Independence Bowl. Formerly known as State Fair Stadium and Fairgrounds Stadium, it is the site of the annual Independence Bowl post-season college football game, initially (1976) the ''Bicentennial Bowl''. Before that, it was the home venue of the Shreveport Steamer of the short-lived World Football League (1974–75). It also served as a neutral site for the annual Arkansas–LSU football rivalry from 1924 to 1936. The 1924 game featured a silver football trophy as part of the dedication ceremonies for the new stadium. The stadium is also host to numerous high school football games and soccer matches, since many schools in Shreveport lack an on-campus facility. AdvoCare International, LLC is an American dietary supplement company. They are a direct sales company and a former multi-level marketing company that was charged with operating a pyramid scheme. The company, headquartered in Richardson, TX, was founded in 1993 by Charles Ragus. History Charles Ragus founded AdvoCare in 1993 as a multi-level marketing (MLM) company to distribute dietary supplement products. The name AdvoCare is short for "Advocates Who Care". Before founding AdvoCare, Ragus worked as a regional vice president for Fidelity Union Insurance, and as a MLM distributor for Herbalife. Arkansas Razorbacks
The Arkansas Razorbacks, also known as the Hogs, are the intercollegiate athletics teams representing the University of Arkansas, located in Fayetteville. The University of Arkansas student body voted to change the name of the school mascot (originally the Cardinals) in 1910 to the Arkansas Razorbacks after a hard-fought battle against LSU in which they were said to play like a "wild band of Razorback hogs" by former coach Hugo Bezdek. 2003 Independence Bowl
The 2003 Independence Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game between the Missouri Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks on December 31, 2003, at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana. Missouri was making their first bowl appearance since 1998. This was Missouri's first bowl game under Head Coach Gary Pinkel. Arkansas, on the other hand, made their sixth straight bowl appearance, but had lost the last three. Arkansas defeated Missouri 27–14, winning their first bowl game since the 2000 Cotton Bowl. It was Arkansas' first victory in the Independence Bowl. Missouri fell to (8–5) on the season, while Arkansas improved to (9–4). This was the Hogs second bowl victory under head coach Houston Nutt. The 2005 Independence Bowl, the 30th in the history of the College Football bowl game, saw the Missouri Tigers of the Big 12 overcome a 21–0 deficit late in the first quarter to defeat the SEC's South Carolina Gamecocks, 38–31 in the 30th edition of the bowl game. 2005 South Carolina Gamecocks Football Team
The 2005 South Carolina Gamecocks football team represented the University of South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference during the 2005 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Gamecocks were led by Steve Spurrier in his first season as USC head coach and played their home games in Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. Schedule The September 1 game versus UCF played host to ESPN's College Gameday, the second year in a row that South Carolina had hosted the program. During the show, ESPN personality Lee Corso made disparaging remarks about the viability of the South Carolina football program which were met with derision by the Columbia crowd. Bryn Renner
Bryn Renner (born January 22, 1990) is an American football coach and former quarterback who was most recently the quarterbacks coach at FIU. He played college football at the University of North Carolina from 2009 to 2013 for head coaches Butch Davis, Everett Withers, and Larry Fedora. He was the starter for the Tar Heels from 2011 to 2013. After going undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, Renner signed with the Denver Broncos and subsequently became a member of the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League (AFL), Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, San Diego Chargers, and Pittsburgh Steelers, mostly on their practice squads. Dwight Jones Jr. (born January 1, 1989) is an American football wide receiver who is currently a free agent. He was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He played college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels. Early years Jones attended Hugh M. Cummings High School in Burlington, North Carolina before transferring to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia. As a senior, he was a Parade All-American after he had 67 receptions for 1,396 yards and 12 touchdowns. Jones was considered one of the top high school wide receiver recruits in 2008. 2010 Music City Bowl
The 2010 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl was the 13th edition of the college football bowl game and was played at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee. The game was played on Thursday, December 30, 2010. The game was notable for its ending, in which North Carolina rushed a field goal unit with too many players to the field in the final seconds of the game and spiked the ball to stop the clock at one second remaining by means of the ensuing penalty. This allowed the Tar Heels to make one more play and score a game-tying field goal; the team went on to win the game 30–27 in double overtime. The controversial ending resulted in an NCAA rule change for the following season, in which a 10-second runoff is assessed on clock-stopping penalties during the final minute of the game. The 2010 Tennessee Volunteers football team represented the University of Tennessee in the 2010 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was coached by Derek Dooley who was in his first season as the 22nd coach in UT football history.
