2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships
The 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships was held in Sestriere, Italy, from January 14 to 23, 2011. IPC stands for International Paralympic Committee. Skiers competed in sitting, standing or visually impaired classification categories in Downhill, Giant Slalom, Slalom, Super-G, Super Combined and Team events. Over 130 skiers competed, including German multiple-Paralympic medalist Gerd Schönfelder, who competed in classification-category standing events. Sestriere hosted the Paralympic alpine skiing competition, at the 2006 Winter Paralympics. The internet-TV channel ParalympicSport.TV, owned by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) broadcast daily live coverage of the Championships, from January 18–23, also available after the Championships as Video on Demand (VOD). Sestriere (/se'strjɛre/) ( oc, Sestrieras, pms, Ël Sestrier, french: Sestrières) is a ski resort in Piedmont, Italy, a ''comune'' (municipality) of the Metropolitan City of Turin. It is situated in Val Susa, from the French border. Its name derives from Latin: ''ad petram sistrariam'', that is at sixty Roman miles from Turin. Christopher Devlin-Young (born December 26, 1962) is an American alpine ski racer and two time Paralympic Champion, who resides in Campton, New Hampshire. He competes as a monoskier in the LW 12–1 class. Career Born in San Diego, Young was paralyzed in a plane crash in Alaska while serving in the United States Coast Guard in 1982. He learned to ski at thNational Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinicin 1986 as a "four-tracker," standing on two skis while using outriggers. He was named to the U.S. Disabled Ski Team in 1989 and competed in the 1990 Disabled Skiing World Championships in Winter Park, Colorado, winning a silver medal and two bronzes in the LW-1 class.
