2011 Hakkâri Attack
The 2011 Hakkari attacks occurred on the night of October 19, 2011, when over 100 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) fighters killed 26 Turkish soldiers in Hakkâri Province. It was allegedly the deadliest PKK attack on Turkish security forces since the Çewlik massacre in 1993 in which 33 unarmed recruits were killed. The PKK said the attack was to avenge a high-ranking PKK commander killed by Turkish operations in Iraqi Kurdistan earlier. Turkish security forces claimed to have killed 49 PKK fighters in their retaliation during the following days, according to Turkish media. Hakkâri (city)
Hakkâri (, ku, Colemêrg), formerly known as Julamerk, is a city and district in the Hakkâri Province of Turkey. It is located about 40 kilometres from the Iraq–Turkey border, but the distance to the nearest Iraqi border crossing (Ibrahim Khalil Border Crossing) by road is about 270 km. The population of the city at the 2010 census was 57,844. This cities elevation and area spans 1,720 m tall and 2,237.19 km2 wide. Etymology Ibn Khallikan wrote in the 13th century that the word Hakkari meant 'belonging to Hakkar', a Kurdish tribe. Hakkâri Province
Hakkâri Province (, tr, Hakkâri ili, ku, Parêzgeha Colemêrgê), is a province in the southeast of Turkey. The administrative centre is the city of Hakkâri. The province covers an area of 7,121 km² and had a population of 286,470 in 2018. The province was created in 1936 out of Van Province and borders Şırnak Province to the west, Van Province to the north, Iran to the east, and Iraq to the south. The current Governor is İdris Akbıyık. The province is a stronghold for Kurdish nationalism and a hotspot in the Kurdish–Turkish conflict. Kurdistan Workers' Party
The Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK is a Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement, which historically operated throughout Kurdistan, but is now primarily based in the mountainous Kurdish-majority regions of southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq. Since 1984, the PKK has utilized asymmetric warfare in the Kurdish–Turkish conflict (with several ceasefires between 1993 and 2013–2015). Bahoz Erdal, also known as Fahman Husain ( ku, Fehman Hûseyn , also spelled Fehman Hüseyin) (born 3 August 1969), in Kurdistan in Syria is a top commander in the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Çewlik Massacre
The 24 May 1993 PKK attack, sometimes referred to as the Bingöl massacre was a Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) attack on unarmed Turkish military soldiers on the Elazığ-Bingöl highway, west of Bingöl. 33 Turkish soldiers and varying conflicting accounts of civilians were killed (two, four five). This occurred following the breaking of the first ever PKK-Turkish ceasefire when Turkish forces attacked the PKK in Kulp. Background In late 1991, Turkish president Turgut Özal attempted to establish dialogue with the PKK. He had said the idea of a federation could be discussed and a Kurdish language TV channel could be opened. He also passed a bill, partially unbanning the use of the Kurdish language.
