The European Fencing Championships is an annual top-level European fencing competition organized by the European Fencing Confederation. History The first competition bearing the name of "European Fencing Championships" was held in Paris in 1921. The International Fencing Federation (FIE) comprised only European federations at the time, with the exception of the United States. In 1936, on the 25th anniversary of the FIE and at the request of the Italian federation, the FIE congress decided to open the European Championships to all countries and granted retroactive recognition of the European Championships as World Championships. After 1937 the FIE focused on the organisation of the World Fencing Championships. Demand for European Championships appeared at the 1979 congress, but it was rejected on the ground that they would either belittle the World Championships or offer a poor fencing level. Elisa Di Francisca
Elisa Di Francisca (; born 13 December 1982) is an Italian former foil fencer, Olympic champion in 2012, World champion in 2010 and three-time European champion. She won the 2010–11 World Cup series and has seven World Cup victories to her name. With the Italian team, she was Olympic champion in 2012, five-time World champion and seven-time European champion. Biography Di Francisca was born in Jesi, a town of the province of Ancona in Marche, to a Sicilian father and a mother from Marche. She is the eldest of three children: her sister Martina was born in 1984 and her brother Michele in 1991. She first tried ballet, but found it too quiet to her taste. Along with her sister, she turned to fencing, the town's national sport: led by maestro Ezio Triccoli, Club Scherma Jesi produced Olympic champions Stefano Cerioni, Giovanna Trillini and Valentina Vezzali. Sebastian Bachmann
Sebastian Bachmann (born November 24, 1986) is a German foil fencer, silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships and bronze medallist at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Career Bachmann took up fencing at the age of five in the craze that followed Germany's fencing medals in at the 1988 Summer Olympics, especially as his hometown Lauda-Königshofen was not far from Tauberbischofsheim, Germany's foil stronghold. He first practiced both foil and épée, before specializing into foil as a teenager. Bachmann won the junior national championship in 2005 and 2006 and was part of the team that earned a silver medal in the 2006 Junior World Championships in Linz. Nathalie Moellhausen (born 1 December 1985) is an épée fencer who initially represented Italy and now represents Brazil. In 2019, she became her country's first-ever individual World Champion in épée at the Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. With the Italy team, she won the team World championship in 2009 and team European championship in 2007. Ana Maria Popescu, formerly known as Ana Maria Brânză (, born 26 November 1984), is a Romanian left-handed épée fencer. Popescu is a four-time team European champion, 2013 individual European champion, and two-time team world champion. A five-time Olympian, Popescu is a two-time individual Olympic silver medalist and 2016 team Olympic champion. Britta Heidemann (born 22 December 1982) is a German épée fencer. In 2016, Heidemann became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Career Épée Fencing At the age of 14, already being a successful athlete and swimmer, Britta Heidemann had her first contact with fencing in a variation of modern pentathlon called Friesenkampf. Tiffany Géroudet (born 3 September 1986 in Sion, Valais) is a Swiss épée fencer, European champion in 2011. She is currently 9th in FIE rankings. Biography Géroudet was born in Sion, Switzerland, in a family of three children. She practiced ski, swimming, and mountain hiking with her siblings before taking on fencing with her brother. She won her first major medal with a gold at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Taebaek City. On the same year, she won her first national championship, which she went on winning seven times in a row. She was a member of the Switzerland women's épée team that earned a bronze medal in the 2009 European Championships in Plovdiv.
