2011 Dutch Senate Election
The elections of the Senate of the Netherlands, Dutch Senate of 2011 were held on 23 May 2011, following the 2011 Dutch provincial elections, provincial elections on 2 March 2011. The 566 members of the twelve States-Provincial elected the 75 Senate members. The new Senate was installed on 7 June 2011. The term ended on 8 June 2015. Participating parties Vote weights The provinces have different population sizes, so the members of the States-Provincial cast weighted voting, weighted votes, to ensure that each vote represents the same number of people. The weight is determined by dividing the population of the province by the number of seats in the States of that province. This number is divided by 100 and rounded. Result The coalition parties VVD and CDA and their supporting party, the PVV, won 37 seats in this election, one short of an overall majority. Senate Of The Netherlands
The Senate ( or simply ' , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or sometimes ' ) is the upper house of the States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections. All provinces and colleges have different electoral weight depending on their population. Members of the Senate tend to be veteran or part-time politicians at the national level, often having other roles. They receive an allowance which is about a quarter of the salary of the members of the lower house. Unlike the politically more significant House of Representatives, it meets only once a week. North Holland
North Holland ( nl, Noord-Holland, ) is a province of the Netherlands in the northwestern part of the country. It is located on the North Sea, north of South Holland and Utrecht, and west of Friesland and Flevoland. In November 2019, it had a population of 2,877,909 and a total area of , of which is water. Jan Nagel
Johan Georg "Jan" Nagel (born 20 June 1939) is a Dutch politician who was a member of the Labour Party, and later formed his own parties. He is currently in the Pensioners' Party 50PLUS. Nagel started his career in his twenties on VARA-Radio where he worked as a producer. At the same time he served as a member of the executive committee of the Dutch Labour Party. Nagel was one of the creators of the radio-program called '' In de Rooie Haan''. He also wrote his ''Tien over Rood'' which served as a political manifesto of the Nieuw Links within the Dutch Labour Party. 50PLUS (; abbreviated 50+) is a political party in the Netherlands that advocates pensioners' interests. The party was founded in 2009 by Maurice Koopman, Alexander Münninghoff, and Jan Nagel. Henk Krol served as the party's leader from 2016 to 2020. The party first participated in the 2011 provincial elections, in which it won nine seats. It currently holds sixteen seats in the provincial councils and two seats in the Senate. Machiel de Graaf (; born 26 June 1969) is a Dutch politician and physical therapist. As a member of the Party for Freedom (PVV) he was a member of the Senate of the Netherlands, Senate as well as Parliamentary group leader, Senate group leader from 7 June 2011 to 20 September 2012. He has been an House of Representatives (Netherlands), MP since 20 September 2012. The Party for Freedom ( nl, Partij voor de Vrijheid, PVV) is a nationalist, right-wing populist political party in the Netherlands. Founded in 2006 as the successor to Geert Wilders' one-man faction in the House of Representatives, it won nine seats in the 2006 general election making it the fifth-largest party in parliament. In the 2010 general election it won 24 seats, making it the third-largest party. At that time the PVV agreed to support the minority government led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte without having PVV ministers in the cabinet. Niko Karel Koffeman (born 12 May 1958) is a Dutch politician and animal rights activist. A Party for the Animals member, he holds a seat and is his party's leader in the Senate since 12 June 2007.
