Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. In Barnsley, the population was 96,888 while the wider Borough has seen an increase of 5.8%, from 231,200 in 2011 census to 244,600 in 2021 census. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is located between the cities of Sheffield, Manchester, Doncaster, Wakefield, and Leeds. The larger towns of Rotherham and Huddersfield are nearby. Jason Shackell
Jason Philip Shackell (born 27 September 1983) is a former English professional footballer who last played for Lincoln City. Shackell primarily plays as a centre-back. Career Norwich City Shackell is a product of the Norwich City youth academy, which he joined in 2000. He made his senior debut for on 5 April 2003 in a 2–1 defeat at Derby County, when he played at left-back following an injury to Adam Drury. Although Shackell's preferred – and best – position is central defender, his first few appearances were at left-back when Drury was either injured or suspended. Jacob Butterfield
Jacob Luke Butterfield (born 10 June 1990) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for National League club Scunthorpe United. Butterfield came through the youth academy at Barnsley and went on to establish himself as a first team player over a five-year spell between 2007 and 2012. He moved to Premier League side Norwich City but failed to make a league appearance and spent time on loan with Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace before signing permanently for Middlesbrough. Jacob Mellis
Jacob Alexander Mellis (born 8 January 1991) is an English professional footballer, currently a free agent. He transferred from Sheffield United to Chelsea at the age of 16 for a £1 million fee, but made only one substitute appearance before being dismissed for misconduct in March 2012. He spent most of the rest of his career in the English Football League, making 94 Championship appearances for Barnsley and Blackpool and scoring eight goals. Liam Michael Dickinson (born 4 October 1985) is an English semi-professional footballer who plays as a striker for Droylsden. He began his senior career in non-league football with Irlam. David Douglas Preece (born 26 August 1976) is an English football journalist and commentator and a former professional player and coach who played as a goalkeeper. He made the majority of his appearances for Darlington, Aberdeen and the Danish club Silkeborg. His final professional appearance came on 2 November 2013 for Lincoln City against Welling United. Career Early career Preece was born Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Martin Devaney
Martin Thomas Devaney (born 1 June 1980) is a football coach and former professional midfielder who was most recently caretaker manager of EFL Championship club Barnsley. Born of Irish parents, Devaney has played for the Ireland under-16s. Goran Lovre (Serbian Cyrillic: Горан Ловре; born 23 March 1982) is a Serbian former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. James John O'Brien (born 28 September 1987) is a professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Notts County. His previous clubs include Motherwell and Ross County in Scotland, and Barnsley and Coventry City in England. Born in Scotland, he represented Ireland at youth international level.
