2010 Zanzibari General Election
General elections were held in Zanzibar on 31 October 2010 alongside the 2010 Tanzanian general elections. Amani Abeid Karume the president of Zanzibar stepped down after completing 2 terms in office. The presidential elections were won by Ali Mohamed Shein of Chama Cha Mapinduzi. Zanzibar elections have always been highly contests and have always been subject to post election violence. To defuse the tensions a Unity government to be formed after the election was proposed, which was put into place after the 2010 Zanzibari government of national unity referendum was overwhelmingly accepted by the population. Ali Mohamed Shein
Ali Mohamed Shein (born 13 March 1948) was the 7th President of Zanzibar, from 2010 to 2020. He was previously Vice President of Tanzania from 2001 to 2010. Shein is originally from the island of Pemba, and he is a member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. He is a medical doctor by profession. Political career Shein was appointed by the President of Zanzibar to be a Member of the House of Representatives on 29 October 1995. He was then appointed Deputy Minister of Health on 12 November 1995. From 6 November 2000, he was a Member of the House of Representatives at Mkanyageni Constituency in Zanzibar before being appointed to be a Minister of State, President's Office, Constitution, and Good Governance in Zanzibar on 22 November 2000, and Vice President of Tanzania in July 2001. Elections in Tanzania occur on both the local and national levels. The local government holds elections for street or village chair people. General elections at the national level elect the President and the members of the National Assembly. The president is elected for a five-year term. The National Assembly The National Assembly, or ''Bunge la Jamhuri ya Muungano'', has 323 members: 232 members elected for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies and 75 seats allocated to women who are elected by the political parties that are represented in the National Assembly. Democratic Party (Tanzania)
The Democratic Party (DP) is a political party in Tanzania. The party was registered on 7 June 2002. The DP is led by Rev. Christopher Mtikila, who is the Reverend of the Full Salvation Church. The DP calls for the dissolution of the Union Government of Tanzania and has openly campaigned for the separation from mainland of the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba from Tanganyika. The DP supports the expulsion of minorities from the mainland. In elections for the Zanzibar Presidency and House of Representatives on 30 October 2005, DP presidential candidate Abdallah Ali Abdallah won 0.11% of the vote. Seif Sharif Hamad
Seif Sharif Hamad (22 October 1943 – 17 February 2021) was a Tanzanian politician who served as the First Vice President of Zanzibar and as Party Chairman of ACT Wazalendo. He was the secretary-general of the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) party and First Vice President of Zanzibar until 18 March 2019 when he announced his resignation from CUF and joined Alliance for Change and Transparency. He was given an ACT Wazalendo card number One, and he also won the party nomination for the 2020 presidential candidate for Zanzibar.
