2010 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2010 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2009-10 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place March 10–13, 2010 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The winner of the tournament received the Southland Conference's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Had the #1 seed Sam Houston State not won the conference tournament, they would have received an automatic bid to the 2010 NIT. Format The top eight teams, regardless of divisional standing, receive a berth in the conference tournament. The championship game was broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Katy is a city in the U.S. state of Texas within the Greater Katy area, itself forming the western part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area. 2009–10 Sam Houston State Bearkats Men's Basketball Team
The 2009–10 Sam Houston State Bearkats men's basketball team represented Sam Houston State University in the 2009–10 college basketball season. This was head coach Bob Marlin's twelfth season at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats competed in the Southland Conference and played their home games at Bernard Johnson Coliseum. They finished the season 25–8, 14–2 in Southland play to capture the regular season championship. Robert Lee Marlin (born March 5, 1959) is an American college basketball coach who is the current head men's basketball coach for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball team. Previously, he was the head coach at Sam Houston State from 1998 to 2010. Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. From 1981 to 2001, the first round of the tournament took place at the higher seed, with the remaining rounds at a set location. In 2002, the Southland changed the format to play games at the campus of sites of each higher seed, during every round of the tournament. This was changed again in 2007, the first year that the conference selected a neutral site for all rounds of the tournament. Southland Conference
The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. An automatic bid is a bid or berth to a tournament, granted based on performance in prior competition, and not based on subjective picking (see: at-large bid). It is used in the United States in all professional sports, in which all playoff bids are automatic and determined by objective formulae; in college sports, all divisions (except the highest division of college football) use a mix of automatic bids and subjective selections to seed the postseason tournaments.
