2010 Northern Cypriot Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Northern Cyprus on 18 April 2010. The result was a victory for Derviş Eroğlu of the National Unity Party, who received 50.38% of the vote in the first round. If no candidate had crossed the 50% threshold, a run-off would have been held on 25 April. Background The International Crisis Group stated in an article titled ''Cyprus: Reunification or Partition?'', published on 30 September 2009, that the upcoming elections in April 2010, were of critical importance to the then-ongoing negotiations between Talat and Demetris Christofias to find a solution for the Cyprus dispute. It was stated that the election results could have a defining impact on the future of the island and whether it would be reunited or divided. National Unity Party (Northern Cyprus)
The National Unity Party ( tr, Ulusal Birlik Partisi, UBP) is a national-conservative political party in Northern Cyprus. It was founded by Rauf Denktaş on 11 October 1975. The party was in power from its creation until the 2003 elections with the exception of the period from 1994–1996. In the 2009 legislative elections for the House of Representatives of Northern Cyprus, the party won 44% of the popular vote and 26 out of 50 seats, forming a majority government. Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu (born 1953) is a Turkish Cypriot politician. He served as a member of the Assembly of the Republic representing the Lefkoşa District between 1998 and 2018. During this time, he was a member of the National Unity Party (UBP) between 1998 and 2010, serving as the leader of the party between 2006 and 2008.
