800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Runners in this event are occasionally fast enough to also compete in the 400 metres but more commonly have enough endurance to 'double up' in the 1500m. Toni Hodgkinson
Toni Louise Hodgkinson (born 12 December 1971) is a former New Zealand middle distance runner, originally from Tākaka. She currently holds the New Zealand woman's record in the 800 m. As a student at Golden Bay High School, Hodgkinson set many New Zealand track and field age-best times, several of which still stand, including 1500 m in 4:29:50 at 13 and 2:04.31 at 17. She is 180 cm tall and in her competing days, weighed 62 kg. She represented New Zealand at both the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. At the 1996 Summer Olympics she made the final, placing eighth with a time of 2:00:54. At the 2000 Summer Olympics she competed in both the 800 m and 1500 m, making it through to the semi finals in the 800m with a time of 1:59:84. Nicole Teter
Nicole Teter (born November 8, 1973 in San Diego, California) is an American middle distance runner, who specialized in the 800 metres. She is a three-time U.S. indoor champion (2002, 2003, and 2008), and a two-time Olympian (2004 and 2008). She also won a gold medal in the same category at the 2002 U.S. Outdoor Championships. Career In 1991, Teter won the CIF California State Meet, then the 800 meters at the US Junior Championships and won the silver medal at the Junior Pan American Games in the same event.
