2009–10 was a season of Beta Ethniki ( el, Β' Εθνική), the Greek professional football second division (''see Greek football league system''). Overview * Atromitos, PAS Giannina and Kavala have earned the promotion to Super League Greece, while Kastoria, Kallithea and Veria relegated to Gamma Ethniki (see 2008–09 Beta Ethniki). *Thrasyvoulos, Panserraikos and OFI will compete in Beta Ethniki this season after being relegated from the Super League in 2008–09. *Doxa Drama and Ilioupoli will compete in Beta Ethniki this season after earning promotion from Gamma Ethniki in 2008–09. The Football League ( el, Φούτμπολ Λιγκ) was the second highest professional football league in Greece since its inception in 1962 as ''Beta Ethniki'' and until 2019. It then served as a third tier after the creation of the Super League 2 as the new second tier and it was eventually abolished in 2021 when the 2021–22 Super League 2 went from a 12 team to a 36 team league, absorbing most of the clubs from the Football League. The Greek football league system includes four levels in which teams can possibly make it to the Super League 1, Greece's highest division of football. 2008–09 Gamma Ethniki
The 2008–09 Gamma Ethniki was the 26th season since the official establishment of the third tier of Greek football in 1983. It started on September 14, 2008 and finished on May 3, 2009. 36 teams contest the league, divided into two groups of 18 clubs each, using certain geographical criteria. 23 of the participant clubs have contested in the 2007-08 season, 3 of them have been relegated from Beta Ethniki, while 10 of them have been promoted from Delta Ethniki. Ilioupoli ( el, Ηλιούπολη,  "Sun City") is a suburban municipality belongs to Central Athens regional unit and located in the central-southern part of the Athens. The 2008–09 Super League Greece was the 73rd season of the highest football league of Greece and the third under the name ''Super League''.
