2009 Sayano–Shushenskaya Power Station Accident
On 17 August 2009, a turbine at the hydroelectric power station of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam near Sayanogorsk in Russia failed catastrophically, flooding the turbine hall and killing 75 people. A section of the roof of the turbine hall collapsed; all but one of the ten turbines were damaged or destroyed. The entire plant output, totalling 6,400 megawatts (MW) – a significant portion of the supply to the local area – was lost, leading to widespread power outages. An official report on the accident was released in October 2009. Background The Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam is located on the Yenisey River in south-central Siberia, Russia, about south of Sayanogorsk, Khakassia. Before the accident, it was the largest hydroelectric power station in Russia and the sixth-largest in the world by average power generation. Yuri Ryazanov
Yuri Sergeyevich Ryazanov (russian: Ю́рий Серге́евич Ряза́нов; 21 March 1987 – 20 October 2009) was a Russian artistic gymnast. He was the 2009 World All-Around bronze medalist, the 2009 Russian All-Around national champion, and the 2007 & 2009 European All-Around bronze medalist. He was a member of the Russian teams that won the gold medals at the 2008 European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships and silver at the 2006 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. Ryazanov competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, placing 17th in the All-Around qualification. Career Ryazanov became a member of the Russian senior national team in 2006. In 2006, he finished 5th on pommel horse and 8th on rings at the Shanghai World Cup in China and then placed 16th in the all around at the 2006 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Lame Horse Fire
The Lame Horse fire occurred on 5 December 2009, around 1 a.m. local time in the nightclub ''Khromaya Loshad'' (russian: «Хромая лошадь», "Lame Horse") at 9 Kuybyshev Street, Perm, Russia. The fire started when sparks from pyrotechnics ignited the low ceiling and its willow twig covering. The fire quickly spread to the walls and damaged the building's electrical wiring, causing the lights to fail. 156 people died as a result of the fire. According to initial reports, up to 160 more were injured in the fire; however, many of the wounded lost their lives in the following days in hospitals. The nightclub was in the middle of a celebration of its eighth anniversary at the time. A total of 282 people had reportedly been invited to the club's anniversary party. 2009 Nevsky Express Bombing
The 2009 Nevsky Express bombing occurred on 27 November 2009 when a bomb exploded under a high speed train travelling between the Russian cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg causing derailment near the town of Bologoye, Tver Oblast (approximately from Moscow), on the Moscow–Saint Petersburg Railway. The derailment occurred at 21:34 local time (18:34 UTC). Russian officials had stated that 39 people were killed and 95 injured but later retracted that estimate. 27 deaths had been reported by 2 December. A second bomb exploded at the scene of the investigation the following day, injuring one. It was reported to have been triggered by a remote mobile phone. The 2009 Yakutia Ilyushin Il-76 crash occurred on 1 November 2009, when an Ilyushin Il-76 jet crashed shortly after takeoff from Mirny Airport in Yakutia, killing all 11 crew on board. Chronology of events The jet, owned by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, took off, with eleven crewmembers on board, from Mirny Airport, where the onboard cargo had been unloaded. The aircraft was bound for the city of Irkutsk, when several minutes after liftoff it banked to the right, hit a slag heap from an old mine and crashed. The elections for the 5th convocation of the Moscow City Duma took place on 11 October 2009. Out of the 35 deputies, 18 were elected through party lists using proportional representation, while the remaining 17 were elected from single-member constituencies. In order to secure seats in the City Duma through proportional representation, parties needed to surpass a 7% popular vote threshold. 2009 Nazran Bombing
The 2009 Nazran bombing occurred on 17 August 2009, in Nazran, the largest city of the Republic of Ingushetia in the Russian Federation. A suicide car bomber attacked police headquarters, and at least 25 people were killed and 164 injured. It was the most serious terrorist attack in Ingushetia in the early 21st century, where there had been social and political unrest related to independence movements. The militant Islamist Caucasus Emirate claimed responsibility for the attack.
