This is a list of Australian television events and premieres which occurred in 2009. The year 2009 is the 54th year of continuous operation of television in Australia. It also marks the introduction of digital multichannels for the three commercial television networks (the Seven Network, the Nine Network and Network Ten), which were each able to launch an alternate standard-definition digital channel, separate from their primary channels, from 1 January. Network Ten launched their channel, One (later known today as 10 Bold), on 26 March, whilst the Nine Network launched kids and movies channel GO! (later known today as 9Go!) on 9 August, and the Seven Network launched catch-up channel 7Two on 1 November. ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' is an Australian television game show which would offer a maximum cash prize of $1,000,000 for answering 15 successive multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty. The show was based on and follows the same general format of the original version of the show from the United Kingdom, and is part of the international ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' franchise. History ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?'' Debuted in Australia on 18 April 1999 on the Nine Network and was hosted by Eddie McGuire. Beginning with an eleven-question format starting at $1,000, this was later changed to 15 and offered a top prize of $1 million. In the 2007 revision of the show, the new maximum prize money on offer is $5 million; however, in the 2010 revision the top prize reverted to $1 million. Stan Walker
Stan Walker (born 23 October 1990) is an Australian-born New Zealand singer, actor, and television personality. In 2009, Walker was the winner of the seventh and last season of '' Australian Idol''. He subsequently signed a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. ''Australian Idol'' is an Australian singing competition, which began its first season in July 2003 and ended its initial run in November 2009. As part of the ''Idol'' franchise, Australian Idol originated from the reality program ''Pop Idol'', which was created by British entertainment executive Simon Fuller. Australian Idol was televised on Network 10 for all seven series and was broadcast on the Southern Cross Austereo Radio Network between 2005 and 2007. The series will return in 2023 after Seven Network announced they will be picking up the show. The Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, commonly referred to simply as the Gold Logie, is an award presented annually at the Australian Logie Awards. The Gold Logie was first awarded at the 2nd Annual TV Week Logie Awards, held in 1960 when the award was originally called Most Popular Personality on Australian Television. It was briefly renamed ''Best Personality on Australian Television'' in 2016-2017. For the 2018 ceremony, the award category name was reverted to Most Popular Personality on Australian Television. The winner and nominees of the Gold Logie are chosen by the public through an online voting survey on the ''TV Week'' website. The Logie Awards (officially the TV Week Logie Awards; colloquially known as The Logies) is an annual gathering to celebrate Australian television, sponsored and organised by the magazine ''TV Week''. The first ceremony was held in 1959 as the TV Week Awards. Awards are presented in twenty categories, representing both public and industry voted prizes. The Gold Logie is the most prestigious award and the industry's highest honour; it's awarded to the ''Most Popular Personality on Australian Television'' for the previous year. So You Think You Can Dance Australia (season 2)
Season two of ''So You Think You Can Dance Australia'', the Australian version of the American reality dance-off series ''So You Think You Can Dance'', is hosted by former Rogue Traders vocalist and solo artist Natalie Bassingthwaighte, with Jason Coleman, Matt Lee and Bonnie Lythgoe acting as the judges. It premiered on 1 February 2009. Talia Fowler was announced as the winner on 26 April 2009. Overview Auditions for the second season were held between September and November 2008 in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. Judges hope that season 2 will see more industry dancers auditioning after the favourable response to the first season of the show. Nigel Lythgoe will make an appearance in this season as a guest judge. He only appeared in the Top 100 week of the auditions.
