2009 WPS Expansion Draft
The 2009 WPS Expansion Draft was a special draft for the Women's Professional Soccer teams Atlanta Beat and Philadelphia Independence, taking place on September 15, 2009. Each expansion team made 9 selections from the existing seven WPS teams. FormatOfficial WPS release * Existing teams may protect up to 10 players, but must leave a minimum of 6 unprotected. Women's Professional Soccer
Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was the top-level professional women's soccer league in the United States. It began play on March 29, 2009. The league was composed of seven teams for its first two seasons and fielded six teams for the 2011 season, with continued plans for future expansion. The WPS was the highest level in the United States soccer pyramid for the women's game. On January 30, 2012, the league announced suspension of the 2012 season, citing several internal organization struggles as the primary cause. Some of these issues included an ongoing legal battle with magicJack owner Dan Borislow and the lack of resources invested into the league. On May 18, 2012, WPS announced the league folded and would not return in 2013. Kelly Lynn Schmedes (; born February 11, 1983) is an American soccer forward who last played for Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer, and was a member of the United States women's national soccer team. Playing career Early life and university Schmedes was born in Odessa, Texas. There she attended Permian High School. She was recruited by, and eventually enrolled in, the University of Texas at Austin. While there, Schmedes played for the Texas Longhorns women's soccer team. Sara Margareta Mattsson (; born 13 May 1979) is a Swedish former football defender who played for KIF Örebro DFF of the Damallsvenskan league. The Boston Breakers were an American professional soccer club based in the Boston neighborhood of Allston. The team competed in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). They replaced the original Breakers, who competed in the defunct Women's United Soccer Association, as the Boston area's professional women's soccer team.
