2009 Individual Speedway European Championship
The 2009 Individual European Championship will be the 9th UEM Individual Speedway European Championship season. The final took place on 23 August, 2009 in Tolyatti, Russia. The championship was won by Renat Gafurov (Russia), who beat Andriej Karpov (Ukraine) and Aleš Dryml, Jr. (Czech Republic) in Run-Off. The defending champion, Matej Žagar, lost in semi-final 3. Individual Speedway European Championship
The Individual Speedway European Championship is an annual individual speedway event organized by the European Motorcycle Union (UEM) to determine the champion of Europe. The competition was founded in 2001 and was initially staged as a one-off meeting before the single event was replaced by the Speedway European Championship series in 2012. History From 1955 to 1975, the European Final was staged as the final qualifying round for the World Speedway Championship, although this did not include British riders who had a separate qualifying round. The European Championships were inaugurated in 2001, organised by European Motorcycle Union (UEM). In 2012 this was replaced by a series of four finals. Regardless of that, ISEC was struggling with prestige and promotion and the best European riders were mostly avoiding this contest. Matija Duh
Matija Duh (3 April 1989 – 3 February 2013) was a Slovenian international motorcycle speedway rider. Duh raced in Poland for KSM Krosno, Orzeł Łódź, and Ostrovia Ostrów Wielkopolski. He also represented Slovenia on several occasions. Duh appeared in two Grand Prix - the Croatian events in 2010 and 2011, where he appeared as a reserve. Alexandru Toma (occasionally known as A. Toma, born Solomon Moscovici; February 11, 1875 – August 15, 1954) was a Romanian poet, journalist and translator, known for his communist views and his role in introducing Socialist Realism to Romanian literature. Having debuted as a Symbolist, Toma was influenced by 19th-century writer Mihai Eminescu, an admiration which came to characterize his entire work. Theo Pijper (born 11 February 1980) is a Dutch motorcycle speedway rider. Career Born in Dokkum, Netherlands, Pijper first rode a motorbike at the age of five. He was a successful long track rider before starting his speedway career. He made his debut in British speedway in 2002 with Edinburgh Monarchs, staying with the team until 2007 in a spell that included a Premier League title in 2003. In 2004 he won the European Grasstrack Championship at Eenrum. In 2007 he moved up to the Elite League with Wolverhampton Wolves, but after losing his place in the team returned to the Monarchs for a short spell, later moving to Berwick Bandits. He lost his team place once again, but later that season won the European Grasstrack Championship for a second time. Sándor Tihanyi (born 28 April 1963) is a Hungarian motorcycle speedway rider. Career Tihanyi was a member of Hungary's national team during the 1980s and 1990s. Tihanyi qualified for the 1988 World Final in Vojens, Denmark where he finished 15th with three points. He was also a reserve for the 1990 World Final at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford, England but did not ride in the final. His greatest achievement was in 1990, when he teamed up with Zoltán Adorján to secure a first medal at world level for Hungary when they won a bronze at the 1990 Speedway World Pairs Championship in Germany. Aleksander Čonda (born 26 August 1990) is a Slovenian motorcycle speedway rider. Career Čonda was a member of the Slovenian national team at 2009 Speedway World Cup. He medalled six times at the Slovenian Individual Speedway Championship. Although he won 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals he never became champion of Slovenia, being denied the gold medal 3 times by Matej Žagar.
