The 7th European Athletics U23 Championships were held between 16 and 19 July 2009 in the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Stadium in Kaunas, Lithuania. Complete results and medal winners were published. Kaunas
Kaunas (; ; also see other names) is the second-largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and an important centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the largest city and the centre of a county in the Duchy of Trakai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai Palatinate since 1413. In the Russian Empire, it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate from 1843 to 1915. Adam Kszczot
Adam Piotr Kszczot (pronounced ; born 2 September 1989) is a retired Polish middle-distance runner, who specialized in the 800 metres. His achievements include a gold medal at the 2018 World Indoor Championships as well as silver medals at the 2014 World Indoor Championships, 2015 and 2017 World Championships in addition to multiple medals on European level. He twice competed at the Olympic Games, in 2012 and 2016, narrowly missing the final on both occasions. Kszczot won 13 individual Polish titles (in- and outdoors, including two 1500 metres titles). He is the current Polish national record holder for the indoor 800 metres. Andrea Lalli (born 20 May 1987 in Florence) is an Italian long distance runner. Biography He started his career with medals at the European Cross Country Championships, taking the junior individual and team titles at the 2006 edition and then winning the under-23 title in 2008. He won his first track medal at the 2009 European Athletics U23 Championships, where he was the runner-up in the 10,000 metres behind Turkey's Mert Girmalegesse, formerly of Ethiopia. Following a win at the Lotto Cross Cup Brussels in December, Lalli formed part of the bronze medal winning Italian men's team at the 2009 European Cross Country Championships. Mert Girmalegesse, formerly Shimelis Girma (Amharic), then Selim Bayrak (Turkish), (born November 30, 1987) is an Ethiopian born Turkish middle and long distance track and field athlete, running in the disciplines of 3000 m, 5000 m and also 10000 m. David McCarthy (born 3 August 1988 in Waterford, Ireland) is a middle-distance athlete who has won international medals. After being voted Irish athlete of the month for April 2009, McCarthy won the bronze medal in the men's 5000 metres at the 2009 European Under-23 Athletics Championships in Kaunas, Lithuania - the only Irish medal of the Championships. Noureddine Smaïl (born 6 February 1987) is an Algerian-born French athlete who specialises in middle and long-distance tracks as well as cross country. Born in Relizane, Algeria, Smaïl moved to France at a young age and began competing for his adopted country in 2006, taking part in the 2006 European Cross Country Championships (finishing 11th in the junior race), and the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics (reaching the 5000 m final). The 2007 season saw significant improvement as he took the 5000 m gold at the 2007 European Athletics U23 Championships. Jakub Holuša
Jakub Holuša (, born 20 February 1988) is a former Czech middle-distance runner. He represented his country in the men's 800 meters at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Olympics, he competed in the 1500 meters. Running career Holuša first took up athletics in the steeplechase discipline. He made his international debut at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Athletics, where he finished seventh overall in the boys' 2000-meter steeplechase. He gradually switched from training for the steeplechase to focusing on the 800 meters, for which he qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics. After many years of racing as an 800-meter runner, he broke out in the 1500 meters when he ran a sub-3:40 result in the men's 1500 at the World Indoor Championships.
