2009 Dubai Sevens
The Dubai Sevens is played annually as part of the IRB Sevens World Series for international rugby sevens (seven-a-side version of rugby union). The 2009 competition was held on December 4 and December 5 at The Sevens. It is the first of eight events in the 2009–10 IRB Sevens World Series. New Zealand won the tournament with a 24–12 victory over Samoa in the final. This was the second edition of the Dubai Sevens to be held at The Sevens. Previous editions were held at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Ground. Format The tournament consists of four round-robin pools of four teams. All sixteen teams progress to the knockout stage. The top two teams from each group progress to quarter-finals in the main competition, with the winners of those quarter-finals competing in cup semi-finals and the losers competing in plate semi-finals. The Dubai Sevens is an annual rugby sevens and social event held at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, UAE. Founded in 1970, the event is the longest running sports event in the Middle East. Events The Dubai Sevens has four competitions each year: * World Rugby Sevens Series * World Rugby Women's Sevens Series * Rugby Invitation Tournament * Netball Invitation Tournament Dubai is the first leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Sixteen teams compete in the men's tournament divided into four pool of four teams. On the first day, each team plays the other three teams in the pool. The two highest teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinal knockout rounds, and the bottom two teams move to the challenge bracket. Vasily Grigorievich Artemyev (russian: Василий Григорьевич Артемьев) (born 24 July 1987) is a Russian rugby union player for CSKA Moscow. He plays as wing or fullback. Career Returning to his native Moscow (Zelenograd) in 2008, he joined professional club VVA and began representing Russia. Vasily signed for Aviva Premiership side Northampton Saints for the 2011-2012 season, joining them after the conclusion of the 2011 World Cup. The South Africa Sevens is played annually as part of the IRB Sevens World Series for international rugby sevens. The 2009 competition took place on 11 December and 12 December at Outeniqua Park in George, Western Cape, the second of eight Cup events at the 2009–10 IRB Sevens World Series. New Zealand won its second consecutive title by defeating Fiji in the final. Format The tournament consists of four round-robin pools of four teams. All sixteen teams progress to the knockout stage. 2009 Edinburgh Sevens
The Edinburgh Sevens is played annually as part of the IRB Sevens World Series for international rugby sevens (seven-a-side version of rugby union). The 2009 competition, which took place on 30 May and 31 May in Edinburgh, Scotland, was the eighth and final Cup trophy in the 2008–09 IRB Sevens World Series. On the first day of the competition, South Africa advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cup competition, thereby assuring them of the overall season title; they needed only to finish within the top nine teams to make it impossible for second-place England to catch them on the season log. South Africa went on advance to the Cup finals, where they were defeated 20–19 by Fiji, who passed England for second place on the season log in the process. Nick Edwards
Nick Edwards (born February 24, 1984) is an Australian-born American former rugby union player. He played for the USA Eagles sevens team and made his debut in 2009. Career In 2013, Edwards along with 16 other players signed residency contracts with USA Rugby. He was in the New York Sevens squad that played at the 2013 World Club 7s that was held at the Twickenham Stadium. He was included in the squad for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow. He was later named in the squad for the 2013 Gold Coast and Dubai Sevens. Edwards captained the Eagles at the 2014 USA Sevens in Las Vegas. Humphrey Kayange
Humphrey Kayange (born 20 July 1982) is a Kenyan former rugby union player and organic chemist. Kayange is known within the rugby sevens community, as he has produced some of the best performances for the Kenya national sevens side. He is a former captain of the team. Collins Injera (born 18 October 1986) is a Kenyan rugby player. He holds the second place for number of tries scored on the World Rugby Sevens Series with 271. He is known for his achievements with Kenyan national rugby sevens team. Career Injera started playing rugby while at Vihiga High School in Vihiga. Alex Cuthbert (born 5 April 1990) is a Welsh rugby union player. Born in Gloucester, he plays on the wing for the Ospreys and the Wales national team.
