The 2009 election for the leadership of the AFL–CIO occurred following the announcement of incumbent president John Sweeney's retirement. The election took place during the 26th AFL–CIO National Convention in Pittsburgh. AFL–CIO
The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO) is the largest federation of unions in the United States. It is made up of 56 national and international unions, together representing more than 12 million active and retired workers. The AFL–CIO engages in substantial political spending and activism, typically in support of progressive and pro-labor policies. The AFL–CIO was formed in 1955 when the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merged after a long estrangement. Union membership in the US peaked in 1979, when the AFL–CIO's affiliated unions had nearly twenty million members. James Boland
James "Jim" Boland (6 October 1856 – 11 March 1895) was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) who was linked to the Irish National Invincibles. He was the father of republican revolutionaries and politicians Harry, Gerald, Ned and Kathleen Boland. Early life James Boland was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, in 1856. Kenneth Joseph Howard Jr. (March 28, 1944 – March 23, 2016) was an American actor. He was known for his roles as Thomas Jefferson in ''1776'' and as basketball coach and former Chicago Bulls player Ken Reeves in the television show '' The White Shadow'' (1978–1981). Vincent Giblin
Vincent Wanostrocht Giblin (born 13 November 1817 in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England), was an Australian banker and cricket player, who played one game for Tasmania. He has the distinction of having participated in the first ever first-class match in Australia, and opened the batting in the second innings. He was a member of Tasmania's notable Giblin family, whose members included William Robert Giblin (1840–1887), Tasmanian Premier and Supreme Court Judge. Giblin served as manager of the Commercial Bank in Hobart until 1853, when he moved to Victoria to take a managerial position in the newly founded Bank of Victoria, and was also president of the Geelong Land and Building Society around 1860. He was manager of the Geelong branch of the Bank of Victoria in 1868 when he succeeded A. H. Richardson as manager of the Australian Joint Stock Bank in Sydney.
