2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari Souths United, who won their third consecutive title. The side were awarded the title after several postponements and the eventual cancellation of the Grand Final, by virtue of their superior regular season finish compared to Rapatona Tigers, who they were due to face in the final. Teams Eight teams entered the competition, an expansion of one from the previous season's seven. Previous season's runners-up Gelle Hills, and bottom two clubs Madang Fox and Besta Madang Fighters, all withdrew. Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. Papua New Guinea National Club Championship
The Papua New Guinea National Club Championship is the top amateur division of association football in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league and was probably founded in 1976. The league was the highest level of football administered by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) until the introduction of the semi-professional National Soccer League in 2006. Thereafter, there were two seasons which ran alongside the semi-professional league, in 2006 and 2008, before the league became defunct after the 2008 edition. In June 2019, the PNGFA announced that the league was to be revived. Sepik FC, sometimes referred to as East Sepik FC, is a professional association football club based in Wewak, Papua New Guinea, founded in 2008 shortly before the start of the 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season. The side took part in just one National Soccer League season, finishing 7th out of eight teams, before failing to return the following season. The club's finest moment perhaps came on 22 November 2008, when they defeated Rapatona FC 1–0 away from home – Rapatona would go on to finish second in the championship later that season. University Inter, founded as ANZ University and formerly known also as ICF University, and, simply, University, is the oldest known semi-professional club association football club in Papua New Guinea, founded in 1969. It is the football club on the campus of the University of Papua New Guinea, based in Port Moresby. The club's finest hour came when they were given the opportunity to represent Papua New Guinea at the 2007–08 OFC Champions League, after they won the 2006 Papua New Guinea National Club Championship and defeated Hekari United in a continental playoff. Hekari United, formerly known as POM Souths, Souths United, PRK Souths United and Hekari Souths United, is a professional football club formed in 2006, based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The club holds the record for most titles in the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, having won eight consecutive titles from 2006 to 2014. They are also one of the two clubs from outside Australia and New Zealand to have won the OFC Champions League, and therefore to have represented Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup, having achieved both in 2010. Michael Foster (born 5 September 1985) is a Papua New Guinean football player who plays as a midfielder for Hekari United, and for the Papua New Guinea national team. He currently is the record-holder for the most caps for the Papua New Guinea national team, with 27, having made his senior international debut aged 17. He was also part of the historic Hekari United side which won the 2009–10 OFC Champions League, becoming the first club outside of Australia and New Zealand to represent Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup.
