2008–09 Luxembourg National Division
The 2008–09 Luxembourg National Division (also known as ''BGL Ligue'' due to sponsorship reasons) was the 95th season of top-tier football in Luxembourg. It started on 2 August 2008 and ended on 24 May 2009. F91 Dudelange successfully defended their title and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Runners-up FC Differdange 03 and third-placed CS Grevenmacher, as well as domestic cup winners UN Käerjeng 97, will participate in the UEFA Europa League. SC Steinfort and Avenir Beggen were directly relegated while US Rumelange retained their National Division status via relegation play-off. Team changes from 2007–08 FC Victoria Rosport and CS Pétange were relegated to the Division of Honour after finishing 13th and 14th in 2007–08. They were replaced by Division of Honour 2007–08 champions US Rumelange and runners-up CS Fola Esch. Luxembourg National Division
The National Division ( lb, Nationaldivisioun, french: Division Nationale, german: Nationaldivision) is the highest football league in Luxembourg. Until 2011, it was known as the BGL Ligue, after the Luxembourg Football Federation managed to seal a sponsorship deal with Fortis. Before 2006, it contained twelve teams, but it expanded to fourteen for the 2006–07 season. Following the abandonment of the previous season, the 2020–21 season saw the further expansion of the league to 16 teams. CS Pétange
Club Sportif Pétange is a former football club, based in Pétange, in south-western Luxembourg. In 2015 it folded and merged with FC Titus Lamadelaine to form Union Titus Pétange. In the 2007–08 season, Pétange finished fourteenth and last in the National Division and were relegated to the Division of Honour. In 2008/09 the club finished top of the Luxembourg Division of Honour and immediately returned to the National Division. They, however, were again relegated at the end of the 2012–13 season. Football Club Progrès Niederkorn is a football club based in Niederkorn, in south-western Luxembourg. History During the German occupation of Luxembourg, the club played in the Gauliga Moselland under the name of FK Niederkorn, where it finished runners-up in 1942–43, behind champions TuS Neuendorf. Three times domestic league winners, the club's most successful years were at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s. They have not won any major silverware since the 1981 league title. Jeunesse Esch (full name ''Association Sportive la Jeunesse d'Esch/Alzette'') is a football club, based in Esch-sur-Alzette, in south-western Luxembourg. The side play in the National Division, the highest league in the country, and have won the league title on 28 occasions between 1921 and 2010, the most of any team in Luxembourg. History The club was founded in 1907 as Jeunesse la Frontière d'Esch in reference to the proximity of their stadium to the border with France.
