This is a summary of the year 2008 in the Irish music industry. Summary January * On Wednesday January 9 the nominations for Irish Album of the Year 2007 were announced. The winner received the Choice Music Prize on Wednesday February 27. * On January 11–12, Cathy Davey, Republic of Loose, Si Schroeder and Halves will be amongst the acts representing Ireland at the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen in the Netherlands. * On Saturday January 19 Primordial recorded their performance at The Button Factory (formerly Temple Bar Music Centre) for inclusion in a possible concert DVD * On Tuesday January 22 it was announced that the low budget Irish movie ''Once'' had been nominated in the Best Original Song category at this year's Oscars. 80th Academy Awards
The 80th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films of 2007. The award ceremony took place on February 24, 2008, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. During the ceremony, AMPAS presented Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories. The ceremony was televised in the United States by ABC, and produced by Gil Cates and directed by Louis J. Horvitz. Comedian Jon Stewart hosted the show for the second time, having previously presided over the 78th ceremony held in 2006. On February 9, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, the Academy Awards for Technical Achievement were presented by host Jessica Alba. Dublin Castle
Dublin Castle ( ga, Caisleán Bhaile Átha Cliath) is a former Motte-and-bailey castle and current Irish government complex and conference centre. It was chosen for its position at the highest point of central Dublin. Until 1922 it was the seat of the British government's administration in Ireland. Much of the current buildings date from the 18th century, though a castle has stood on the site since the days of King John, the first Lord of Ireland. The Castle served as the seat of English, then later British, government of Ireland under the Lordship of Ireland (1171–1541), the Kingdom of Ireland (1541–1800), and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (1800–1922). After the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921, the complex was ceremonially handed over to the newly formed Provisional Government led by Michael Collins. Heineken Green Energy
Heineken Green Energy was an Irish music festival that took place at Dublin Castle over the May bank holiday weekend. It attracted over 50,000 people per year for what was the opening of the music festival season in Ireland. The event, sponsored by Heineken International first took place in 1996 and occurred on an annual basis until 2008. While the main event occurred in Dublin Castle, smaller shows were held in other city venues. Radio Soulwax
''Radio Soulwax'' is the former project of David and Stephen Dewaele of 2manydjs. It has taken several forms, most recently appearing as aappanhosting 24 individual hour-long mixes, with custom visuals similar to those used in the 2manydjs live sets. Background The earliest incarnation of Radio Soulwax debuted owww.soulwax.comin around 2001. Initially it featured 10 mp3 playlists, sequenced like DJ sets, although more were added later. More recently the Radio Soulwax project was revived, because they said that they came to a level that they headline festivals, they can always play for a big audience, etc. But they found at a certain moment that it began to be a bit limiting. They had a lot of musical ideas that they couldn't realise on this level, so they searched a solution. The Kooks
The Kooks () are an English pop-rock band formed in 2004 in Brighton. The band consists of Luke Pritchard (vocals/rhythm guitar), Hugh Harris (lead guitar/synthesizer/bass) and Alexis Nunez (drums). Their music is primarily influenced by the 1960s British Invasion movement and post-punk revival of the new millennium. The Kooks have experimented in several genres including rock, Britpop, pop, reggae, ska, and more recently, funk and hip-hop, being described once as a "more energetic Thrills or a looser Sam Roberts Band, maybe even a less severe Arctic Monkeys at times". Malahide Castle
Malahide Castle ( ga, Caisleán Mhullach Íde), parts of which date to the 12th century, lies close to the village of Malahide, nine miles (14 km) north of central Dublin in Ireland. It has over of remaining parkland estate, forming the Malahide Demesne Regional Park. History The estate began in 1185, when Richard Talbot, a knight who accompanied Henry II to Ireland in 1174, was granted the "lands and harbour of Malahide." The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and it was home to the Talbot family for 791 years, from 1185 until 1976, the only exception being the period from 1649 to 1660, when Oliver Cromwell granted it to Miles Corbet after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland; Corbet was hanged following the demise of Cromwell, and the castle was restored to the Talbots. Eric Clapton
Eric Patrick Clapton (born 1945) is an English rock and blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is often regarded as one of the most successful and influential guitarists in rock music. Clapton ranked second in ''Rolling Stone''s list of the " 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and fourth in Gibsons "Top 50 Guitarists of All Time". He was also named number five in ''Time'' magazine's list of "The 10 Best Electric Guitar Players" in 2009. ''Are You Listening?'' is Dolores O'Riordan's debut solo album. It was released on 4 May 2007 in Ireland, 7 May 2007 in Europe and 15 May 2007 in North America. The first single, "Ordinary Day", was released in late April. The "Ordinary Day" video was shot in the city of Prague. The second single was "When We Were Young". O'Riordan embarked on the ''Are You Listening Tour'' May 2007. Production and development After the release of the band's compilation album '' Stars: The Best of 1992–2002'', O'Riordan told her band mates that she had decided to take a break to go on a journey of discovery. Dolores O'Riordan
Dolores Mary Eileen O'Riordan ( ; 6 September 1971 – 15 January 2018) was an Irish musician, singer and songwriter. She was best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist for the alternative rock band the Cranberries. One of the most recognizable voices in rock in the 1990s, she was known for her lilting mezzo-soprano voice, signature yodel, emphasized use of keening, and strong Limerick accent. O'Riordan was born in County Limerick, Ireland, to a Catholic working-class family.
