2008 Vancouver Municipal Election
The 2008 Vancouver municipal election was held on November 15, 2008, filling seats on the Vancouver School Board, the Park Board, the Vancouver City Council, and the position of Mayor of Vancouver. It was held at the same time as municipal elections throughout the province. Three major civic parties were represented: the Coalition of Progressive Electors, the Non-Partisan Association, and Vision Vancouver. The Green Party of Vancouver fielded one candidate for Park Board commissioner. Candidates and results All incumbents are marked with (I) before their names. Mayor One mayor was elected out of 15 candidates. Of the candidates, four were affiliated with a political party, and eleven were independent. Gregor Robertson of Vision Vancouver was elected. Vancouver City Council
Vancouver City Council is the governing body of Vancouver, British Columbia. The council consists of a mayor and ten councillors elected to serve a four-year term. Monthly, a deputy mayor is appointed from among the councillors. The current mayor is Ken Sim, who leads the party ABC Vancouver. City council meetings are held in Vancouver City Hall. The most recent election was on October 15, 2022. Structure Unlike many other cities of its size, all Vancouver city councillors are elected at-large, rather than being elected to represent municipal wards. A proposal to move to a conventional ward system was rejected by voters in a 2004 referendum. Marc Emery
Marc Scott Emery (born February 13, 1958) is a Canadian cannabis rights activist, entrepreneur and politician. Often described as the "Prince of Pot", Emery has been a notable advocate of international cannabis policy reform, and has been active in multiple Canadian political parties at the provincial and federal levels. Emery has been jailed several times for his cannabis activism. He is the estranged spouse of fellow activist Jodie Emery, with whom he operated Cannabis Culture magazine and Pot TV. Elizabeth Ball (politician)
Elizabeth Ball is a Canadian politician, actress, and founder of several theatre companies. She served on Vancouver city council 2005 to 2018. Career Ball was elected to Vancouver City Council in 2005 and re-elected in 2011 and 2014. She ran with the Non-Partisan Association (NPA). Ball did not seek re-election in 2008. A graduate of The Playhouse Theatre, she taught Theatre in Education at the University of British Columbia for many years. Suzanne Anton, (born May 31, 1952) is a Canadian politician and the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of British Columbia.
