2008 Speedway World Cup Qualification
The 2008 Speedway World Cup Qualification (SWC) was two events of motorcycle speedway meetings used to determine the two national teams who qualify for the 2008 Speedway World Cup. According to the FIM rules the top six nations (Poland, Denmark, Australia, Great Britain, Sweden and Russia) from the 2007 Speedway World Cup were automatically qualified. Qualification was won by Hungary and Czech Republic teams. Speedway World Cup
The Speedway World Cup is an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The first edition of the competition in the current format was held in 2001 and replaced the old Speedway World Team Cup, World Team Cup which ran from 1960 until 2000. The last edition was in 2017. From 2018, the World Cup was replaced by the Speedway of Nations, which effectively brought back the pairs format. However, in 2023 the World Cup will return. Format The final tournament usually lasted for about a week with four meetings held in six or seven days. It started with two first round "events", each consisting of four national teams. The winners of these events qualified automatically for the final, while those who finished second and third competed in the race-off. Last place finishers were eliminated. Billy Mitchell Janniro (born 30 July 1980 in Benicia, California, United States) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from the United States. Career Billy "The Kid" Janniro rode for the Coventry Bees and Peterborough Panthers in the British Leagues, and also represented the USA in the 2001 Speedway World Cup Final at the Olympic Stadium in Wrocław, Poland. He is a ten-time winner of the AMA National Speedway Championship, having won the title in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and a six times USA Champion. Christian Hefenbrock born (15 May 1985 in Kyritz, Germany) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Germany. Career He first rode in the United Kingdom for the Wolverhampton Wolves in the Elite League in 2006. It was in 2006 that he became the German champion after winning the German Individual Speedway Championship. In 2007, he was signed by the Lakeside Hammers but was replaced mid season when one of their own assets was made available. He has represented the Germany team in the Speedway World Cup in every tournament from 2003 until 2007. Kevin Wölbert (born 14 June 1989) is a German speedway rider who has won Individual German Champion title in 2008. Career history When Max Dilger was injured, Wölbert was nominated as second track reserve at the 2008 German Grand Prix. But, after re-staged this event in Bydgoszcz, Poland (as the Final Grand Prix), Wölbert was replaced by Pole Grzegorz Zengota. Due to having Polish roots through his grandmother, Wölbert has been interest of Polish citizenship. He applied for citizenship in November 2009 in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship Office in Bydgoszcz. His application was support by President of Grudziądz Robert Malinowski and a GTŻ Grudziądz, his Polish team. His application will be consider by the President of the Republic of Poland. Tobias Kroner (born 16 October 1985) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Germany. Speedway career Kroner began his British league career after he signed for Oxford for the 2005 Elite League speedway season. He struggled during the season but switched to Ipswich Witches the following season where his form began to improve. In 2007, he remained with Ipswich and made his Polish league debut for Orzeł Łódź in the Polish Speedway First League. He then joined Wybrzeże Gdańsk, with whom he reached the Ekstraliga. After four seasons with Ipswich he would have one more season in Britain riding for the Belle Vue Aces during the 2010 Elite League speedway season. He continued to ride in Poland, racing for Ostrów Wielkopolski and Wanda Kraków.
