2008 Preston Council Election
Elections to Preston City Council took place on 1 May 2008. Preston council is elected "in thirds" which means one councillor from each three-member ward, and councillors from selected two-member wards, are elected each year, with one year free from all elections to ensure all councillors serve a full term. 2004 Preston Council Election
This article shows the results of local elections for Preston City Council, in Lancashire held on 10 June 2004 Preston Council is elected "in thirds" which means there is an all out election in one year followed by single-member elections in subsequent years in which one councillor from each of the three-member wards and one councillor from selected two-member wards defend their seat. In these elections in 2004 the share of the vote is compared with the 2003 elections, whilst any gain or loss of a seat is compared with the all out 2002 elections. Those councillors elected in 2004 will defend their seats in 2008. In summary, Labour won 7 wards, with a total of 10,445 votes (28% across the city), the Conservatives 7 wins, with 14,754 votes in total, 39% across the city. RESPECT - The Unity Coalition
The Respect Party was a left-wing to far-left, socialist political party active in the United Kingdom between 2004 and 2016. At the height of its success in 2007, the party had one Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons and nineteen councillors in local government. The Respect Party was established in London by Salma Yaqoob and George Monbiot in 2004. Arising in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, it grew out of the Stop the War Coalition and from the start revolved largely around opposition to the United Kingdom's role in the Iraq War. Uniting a range of leftist and anti-war groups, it was unofficially allied to the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) and the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), a far-left, Marxist group. In 2005, Respect's candidate George Galloway was elected MP for Bethnal Green and Bow and the party came second in three other constituencies.
