2008 Portland, Oregon Mayoral Election
On May 20, 2008, an election was held in Portland, Oregon, to elect the mayor.. Sam Adams was elected, defeating challenger Sho Dozono. Incumbent mayor Tom Potter did not seek a second term. Portland uses a nonpartisan system for local elections, in which all voters are eligible to participate. All candidates are listed on the ballot without any political party affiliation. Candidates competed in a blanket primary election on May 20, 2008. Because Sam Adams received an absolute majority of the vote in the primary election, no run-off election was held. Samuel Francis Adams (born September 3, 1963) is an American politician and non-profit leader who is the former mayor of Portland, Oregon. He was elected to a four-year term as mayor of Portland in the May 2008 primary, with 58% of the vote. He was the first openly gay mayor of a top-30 U.S. city. In July 2011, Adams announced that he would not seek a second term as mayor. He had an approval rating of 56% eight months before he left office. In 2021, he became Portland's director of strategic innovations for the office of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. Sho Dozono
Sho Dozono (born 1944) is a Japanese-American businessman and former political candidate from Portland, Oregon. He was a candidate in the 2008 Portland mayoral race. Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams was the front runner throughout the race. Dozono, who would have faced Adams again in November if neither candidate had cleared 50%, lost to him in the primary when Adams won 58% of the vote. A prominent member of the Portland business community, Dozono served as chairman of the chamber of commerce, and he has been the CEO and owner of the regional travel agency Azumano Travel since 1987. He has not previously held public office, but was considered one of the top two candidates. Dozono ran on a platform centering on fiscal responsibility and his history of civic and educational activism. Thomas Jay Potter (born September 12, 1940) is a former American politician and law enforcement officer in the U.S. state of Oregon. He served as Mayor of Portland from 2005 to 2009, and had been the chief of the Portland Police Bureau. As mayor he continued his advocacy of community policing and expressed interest in other reforms of the Portland police department. He marched against the Iraq War on the first anniversary of American involvement in March 2004 and was dismayed at the black uniforms and the militarized appearance of the Portland police he saw. A nonpartisan blanket primary is a primary election in which all candidates for the same elected office run against each other at once, regardless of the political party. Partisan elections are, on the other hand, segregated by political party. Nonpartisan blanket primaries are slightly different from most other elections systems with two-rounds/runoff, aka "jungle primaries" (such as the (Louisiana primary), in a few ways.
