2008 Paris Municipal Election
Municipal elections were held in Paris on 9 and 16 March 2008, at the same time as other French municipal elections. The outgoing Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë ( PS), faced UMP candidate Françoise de Panafieu who was chosen to head his party's list in a primary election held in 2006. The MoDem MEP and François Bayrou supporter, Marielle de Sarnez, was the centrist candidate. Control of the 20 arrondissements of the French capital was also to be decided in the elections. Of these, the PS- Greens-MRC controlled 12 (10 PS, 1 Green, 1 MRC) and the UMP eight. 163 councillors were due to be elected in the 20 arrondissements. As a result of the election, Bertrand Delanoë was re-elected with a larger majority. The left controls 99 seats against 63 for the right, two for other right-wing dissidents, and one MoDem. Seybah Dagoma (born 9 June 1978 in Nantes, France) is a French lawyer and politician of the Socialist Party who served as a member of the French National Assembly on 17 June 2012, representing the department of Paris. Early life and education Born to immigrants from Chad in Nantes in 1978, Dagoma grew up in a low-income housing project in Sarcelles. She studied law. Ana María "Anne" Hidalgo Aleu (, ; born 1959) is a Spanish-French politician who has served as Mayor of Paris since 2014, the first woman to hold the office. She is a member of the Socialist Party. Hidalgo served as First Deputy Mayor of Paris under Mayor Bertrand Delanoë (2001–2014), having held the title of Councillor of Paris since the 2001 municipal election. She served as French Minister of the Environment in the Alain Juppé cabinets 1 and II 1995–1997 and as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) 2009–2014 for the North-West constituency. Jean-Marie Cavada (born 24 February 1940 in Épinal, Vosges) is a French politician and former journalist and media executive who last served as a Member of the European Parliament for Ile de France from 2004 until 2019. Jacques Bravo (29 December 1943 – 18 December 2019) was a French politician who was a member of the Socialist Party. Biography After he graduated from ENSAE ParisTech in 1968, Bravo worked for the Minister of National Education. He began his political career in 1983 at the Ministry of the Economy and Finance before being appointed as Financial Director at the Ministry of Higher Education and Research along with Laurent Fabius and Hubert Curien.
