2008 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships
The 4th IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships were held between March 29, 2008, and April 5, 2008, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, United States, at the New England Sports Center. Organized by Massachusetts Hockey in co-operation with US Paralympics, around 200 athletes from ten countries participated in the 10-team round robin tournament which featured two divisions: six teams in group A and four teams in group B. A Tournament The A Tournament was held between Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway and the United States, all teams which had competed at the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games and which were then-ranked as the world's best sledge hockey teams. Billy Bridges
Billy Bridges (born 22 March 1984) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball player. Born in Summerside, he has spina bifida. On July 1, 2011, Bridges married former Olympic women's ice hockey player Sami Jo Small. He competed at the 2022 Winter Paralympics, in Para ice hockey winning a silver medal. Life He began playing ice sledge hockey in 1997, aged 12, for the Kitchener Sidewinders. Aged 14, he was selected for Canada's national team, the youngest player ever to be picked. He has World Championship golds from 2000, 2008, 2013 and 2017 and Paralympic gold from 2006, where he was picked for the All-Star Team. As well as ice sledge hockey, he has a career as a wheelchair basketball player, including seven Canadian titles with Team Ontario. In 2001, he also competed at the Junior World Championships, and in 2005 was selected as the team's most valuable player (MVP). Graeme Murray
Graeme Murray (born 14 December 1984, in Bracebridge) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. He contracted a virus when he was three, which spread to his spinal cord, causing paralysis. He made his debut for Canada's national team aged 15, and in 2002 was the team's youngest member at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Paralympic Games. In 2014 Murray retired from competition to move back to his hometown of Gravenhurst, Ontario. Since then he has been actively engaged in the community and won a seat on the town council during the Ontario Municipal Elections in October of 2018. Helge Bjørnstad (born 14 October 1971) is a Norwegian ice sledge hockey player. As a member of the Norwegian ice sledge hockey team he has three silver (1994, 2002, 2006) from the Paralympic Games. At the 1998 Paralympic Games the team took the gold medal. He took the bronze medal with the Norwegian team at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. Greg Westlake
Gregory Westlake (born 12 June 1986) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Early life and career Both his legs were amputated when he was 18 months old; because of a congenital defect he had no tibia in one leg, and no fibula in the other. At age six he appeared in a public service announcement for The War Amps non-profit organization on playing safe, and is still close to the organization that provides support and services to all Canadian amputees. He began to play ice sledge hockey in 2001 at age 15, for the Mississauga Cruisers, then made his debut for the Canadian national team in 2003, eventually becoming captain of the team. Benoît St-Amand (born 19 April 1978) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. He had a bone cancer in his right leg when he was 15 (1993), and his leg was amputated above the knee in 1995.
