2008 Guernsey General Election
The 2008 Guernsey general election was held on 23 April 2008 to elect 45 members of the States of Guernsey. 18,576 voters or 40.58% of the eligible population of 45,772 turned out and cast a total of 89,239 votes; there were 10 blank papers, 35 spoilt papers and on average 4.8 votes were cast. Of the 28 standing deputies all but two ( Brian de Jersey and Wendy Morgan), were re-elected to the house; this means that 19 of the Deputies-Elect are new to the chamber. Five of the 12 candidates who had stood unsuccessfully in 2004 were elected in 2008. The candidate who polled the most votes was first time candidate Matt Fallaize standing in the Vale, who received 2,322 and became the youngest member of the house at 26. States Of Guernsey
The States of Guernsey (french: États de Guernesey), sometimes referred to as the Government of Guernsey, is the parliament and government of the British Crown dependency of Guernsey. Some laws and ordinances approved by the States of Guernsey also apply to Alderney and Sark (the other component parts of the Bailiwick of Guernsey) as "Bailiwick-wide legislation" with the consent of the governments of those islands. All enactments of the States of Guernsey apply to Herm as well as Guernsey, since Herm is directly administered by the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Martin Storey (died July 22, 2015) was a Channel Islander politician who served as a deputy in the States of Guernsey from 2008 until his death on July 22, 2015, representing the St Peter Port North constituency. Elections In Guernsey
Guernsey elects a legislature at the national level. The islands of Alderney and Sark also elect their own parliaments. Guernsey The Guernsey legislature, the States of Deliberation, consists of 38 elected members (known as Deputies) and two representatives of Alderney, with the Bailiff (or his Deputy) acting as Presiding Officer with neither a casting nor original vote. In addition the Law Officers of the Crown are members of the States of Deliberation but they may not vote and by convention only address the assembly when answering questions or offering legal advice on matters under debate. David Jones (Guernsey Politician)
Dave Jones (1949 – 5 July 2016) was a member of the States of Guernsey and president of the States Trading Supervisory Board. Born in 1949, he was found in a cellar in Golders Green, London with his sister Kathleen. They were both suffering from malnutrition and influenza. David was taken into the care of Barnardo's where he remained until the age of 15 when he started work. He left England as a young man and settled in Guernsey in 1970, worked in the heavy plant industry, and was one of the island's government ministers. Married in 1978, he has two grown children and three grandchildren. He supported Guernsey's self-governance and independence. He was a member of the External Relations Group, supported island-wide voting, parish schools, tougher sentencing for criminal damage, tidal power, and the continuation of the social house-building programme. Mary Lowe (Guernsey Politician)
Mary May Lowe is a politician in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. She served in the island's legislature for 26 years, becoming Guernsey's longest-serving politician, before leaving office after the 2020 general election. Political career Lowe was first elected as a representative of the parish of Vale in the States of Guernsey, the bailiwick's legislature, in 1994. She was consistently reelected over the next two decades. Beginning in 2004 she served as social security minister on the States of Guernsey's Policy Council. She lost the ministerial position in 2007 to Diane Lewis, with Lowe attributing her election loss to the Fallgate scandal. After a long career in the legislature, Lowe became the first person to hold the title of "Mother of the House." Saint Sampson, Guernsey
St Sampson (Guernésiais: ) is a parish of Guernsey, an island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, directly north of St Peter Port. It is on the north-west and north-east coasts of the island and is split into two sections, intersected by Vale. The parish has a population of 8,966. Its residents are known as (the Guernésiais for frogs). What is currently the northern boundary of the parish originally ran along the south coast of Le Braye du Valle, a tidal channel that made the northern extremity of Guernsey, Le Clos du Valle, a tidal island. La Braye du Valle was drained and reclaimed in 1806 by the British Government as a defence measure. The eastern end of the former channel became the town and harbour (from 1820) of St. Sampson's, now the second biggest port in Guernsey. The western end of La Braye is now Le Grand Havre. The ''Guernsey Press and Star'', more commonly known as the ''Guernsey Press'' is the only daily newspaper published in Guernsey. History The ''Guernsey Evening Press'' was first published in 1897. In 1951 it purchased the struggling ''Guernsey Star'' (first published in 1813), renaming itself ''Guernsey Evening Press and Star''.
