2008 FIVB Volleyball World League
The 2008 FIVB Volleyball World League was the 19th edition of the annual men's international volleyball tournament, played by 16 countries from 13 June to 27 July 2008. The Final Round was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pools composition Intercontinental round *The Final Round hosts Brazil, the winners of each pool and a wild card chosen by the FIVB will qualify for the Final Round. If Brazil are ranked first in Pool A, the team ranked second of Pool A will qualify for the Final Round. Riley Salmon
Riley Salmon (born July 2, 1976, in Amarillo, Texas) is a volleyball player from the United States. He graduated from Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, and played two years of varsity volleyball at Pierce College from 1994-96 before joining the men's national team in May 2001 as an outside hitter. He competed at the 2004 Olympics and the 2008 Olympics. At the 2008 Olympics, he helped Team USA win the gold medal. In July 2009, it was announced that Salmon faced a four-month suspension by the FIVB for violating anti-doping policy rules. Salmon was taking Avapro, a medication approved by the FIVB for hypertension, however the drug's replacement Avalide contained a banned substance, hydrochlorothiazide. The FIVB stated that it was not intentional doping. The suspension period began on May 27, 2009. Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho, known as Giba (born 23 December 1976), is a Brazilian former professional volleyball player who played as an outside hitter. For much of the 2000s, he was widely regarded as one of the best volleyball players in the world. During his professional career he played in Brazil, Italy, Russia, Argentina and briefly in the United Arab Emirates. He is mostly remembered for his successes with the national team. Dante Guimarães Santos do Amaral (born 30 September 1980) is a former Brazilian professional volleyball player, who is best known as Dante. Measuring and , he played in the position of outside hitter. He was born in Itumbiara. Biography Early years Career Dante began his professional career in 1999 with the club Tres Corações. Hugh McCutcheon
Hugh Donald McCutcheon (born 13 October 1969), a native of Christchurch, New Zealand, is a former volleyball coach. He previously coached the US men's and women's national volleyball team, and was the head coach for the University of Minnesota's women's volleyball team from 2012–2022. Starting in January 2023, McCutcheon is the assistant athletics director/sport development coach at Minnesota, after announcing his resignation from the volleyball team at the conclusion of the 2022 season. Scott Joseph Touzinsky (born April 22, 1982) is an American volleyball player and coach. He was a member of the U.S. national team 2007–2018. With the national team, Touzinsky played in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and won a gold medal. Personal life Touzinsky was born in St. Louis to Charles and Anne Touzinsky, who are of Polish origin. Gabriel "Gabe" Bryan Gardner (born March 18, 1976, in San Diego, California) is an American professional volleyball player. He is a two-time Olympian, having played at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics with the U.S. national team. Thomas John "Tom" Hoff (born June 9, 1973) is a retired American volleyball player. He was a middle blocker and has been with the U.S. national team from 1996 until 2009.
