right The 5th FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships were held May 3–8, 2008 in Seville, Spain. The races were held on a 2.5-kilometer loop-course in the Guadalquivir river in the city center. A total of 165 swimmers (81 females, 84 males) were entered into the 6 races at the 2008 Open Water Worlds: *Saturday, May 3: women's 10K *Sunday, May 4: men's 10K *Tuesday, May 6: women's 5K, men's 5K *Thursday, May 8: women's 25K, men's 25K The 10K races served as the initial qualifier for the 10K race at the 2008 Olympics. David Davies (swimmer)
David Michael Rhys Davies (born 3 March 1985) is a Welsh former competitive swimmer who has represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games, and swam for Great Britain at Summer Olympics, world championships and European championships, winning medals in each of those major international championships. Davies specialised in long-distance freestyle and open water events. Born in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Davies swam for Wales at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and represented Great Britain at the 2004, 2008 Olympics and 2012 Olympics. As of the end of 2010, he held the British Records in the 400-, 800- and 1500-metre freestyle events. Swimming career At the 2003 European Junior Championships he won a gold medal. At the 2004 Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the men's 1,500m freestyle, in a time of 14:45.95 (a British and European record). Swimming At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Marathon 10 Kilometre
The men's marathon 10 kilometre event at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on 21 August at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing, China. Dutch swimmer and cancer survivor Maarten van der Weijden enjoyed the race of his life as he sprinted in a three-way battle against Great Britain's David Davies and Germany's Thomas Lurz to a spectacular finish under a scorching rain, and most importantly, to claim the Olympic title in the inaugural men's open water marathon. With only a few hundred metres left, he pulled ahead from the rest of the field before slapping the yellow pads first in 1:51:51.6. Van der Weijden was diagnosed with leukemia in 2001; however, with the aid of a stem cell treatment, he came back stronger from a two-year ordeal to resume his swimming career. Yuri (Yury) Kudinov (russian: Юрий Кудинов; born 27 February 1979, in Volgograd) is a long-distance swimmer from Russia. In 2007 he narrowly missed the world record for the fastest swim across the English Channel when he was beaten by Petar Stoychev. His time of remains one of the fastest swims ever recorded, but was not enough to beat Stoychev's set on the same day (24 August 2007). Mark Warkentin
Mark Warkentin (born November 14, 1979) is an American open water swimmer and swimming coach. After graduating from San Marcos High School in 1998, Warkentin attended the University of Southern California, from which he graduated in 2003 with a degree in communication. While a Trojan, he was a four-time All-American. He was also awarded USC's Willis Award as a freshman. Warkentin qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing following his performance at the 2008 Open Water World Championships. In the lead-up to the Games he was noted by ''Time'' as one of its "100 Olympic Athletes To Watch." He is a two-time national champion in the open water 25-kilometer, the longest sanctioned race in the sport.
