Challenge Tour
The Challenge Tour is the second-tier men's professional golf tour in Europe. It is operated by the PGA European Tour and, as with on the main European Tour and the European Senior Tour, some of the events are played outside Europe. History The tour was introduced in 1986 and was initially called the ''Satellite Tour''. The Order of Merit was introduced in 1989, with the top five players on it winning membership of the European Tour for the following season. The following year the tour was renamed the Challenge Tour. Up to 1993 the Challenge Tour rankings were based on each player's best several results, but since 1994 it has been a straightforward money list, with all results counting. Players who are successful on the Challenge Tour qualify for membership of the European Tour the following year. Twenty players earn direct promotion to the European Tour. Marcus Higley
Marcus Higley (born 16 May 1974) is an English professional golfer. He previously played on the European Tour and the Challenge Tour. Career Higley turned professional at the young age of 17. He qualified to the Challenge Tour in 2001 and enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2006, recording his first win at the Thomas Bjørn Open and earning a European Tour card for the first time. In his debut season at the highest level, he recorded several top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish at the dual-sanctioned Open de Saint-Omer. He regained his European Tour card at the first attempt via the 2008 Challenge Tour, but endured a tough season on the full tour due to injury. Despite surgery, in 2012 he retired from the professional golf circuit. South African Open Championship
The South African Open is one of the oldest national open golf championships in the world, having first been played in 1903, and is one of the principal tournaments on the Southern-Africa-based Sunshine Tour. Since 1997 it has also been co-sanctioned by the European Tour. History The first formal event was organised in 1903, following a series of exhibition matches that had been held over the preceding ten years. The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. Although non-whites had played in the South African Open before, most notably when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, it was not until 1972 that black golfers were allowed to compete. Benn Barham
Benn Barham (born 6 February 1976) is an English professional golfer on the European Tour. Barham was born in Ashford, Kent. He has won two tournaments on the second tier Challenge Tour, the 2001 NCC Open and the 2005 Open Mahou de Madrid. Since graduating from the Challenge Tour at the end of 2005, he has managed to retain his European Tour card each season by finishing inside the top 120 on the Order of Merit, and through the end of 2009, had a best tournament finish on the tour of second place at the 2009 Austrian Golf Open. Despite that result he lost his card at the end of 2009, and spent 2010 playing on both the European and Challenge Tours. In October 2010 Barham had his right kidney removed after a cancerous tumour was diagnosed; he returned to competitive golf at the Kenya Open in April 2011. Austrian Golf Open
The Austrian Open is a men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was founded in 1990, and was a European Tour event for seven straight years up to 1996, being held under a variety of names due to regular changes of title sponsor. The tournament dropped down to the Challenge Tour schedule between 1997 and 2005, with a sharp reduction in prize money, before returning to the main tour for the 2006 season. In 2012, it was announced that the Austrian shopping community Lyoness and its affiliated Greenfinity foundation would be the title sponsors for three seasons. The 2018 event was the first professional tournament to use a shot clock on every shot. José-Filipe Lima
José-Filipe Lima (born Philippe Lima; November 26, 1981) is a Portuguese professional golfer. He won the 2004 Aa St Omer Open to gain a place on the European Tour. His best seasons were from 2005 to 2007 when he finished in the top-100 on the European Tour Order of Merit. Successful Challenge Tour seasons in 2009, 2013 and 2016 have promoted him back to the European Tour but, on each occasion he has failed to retain his place on the tour. He was runner-up in the 2007 BMW International Open. Early life Lima has Portuguese parents but was born in Versailles, France and grew up mainly in France. His father worked at Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, which was the host course of the Trophée Lancôme until that tournament ceased in 2003, and was his son's first coach. The Saint-Omer Open is an annual men's professional golf tournament played at Saint-Omer Golf Club in Saint-Omer, France. The tournament was founded in 1997 and was part of the MasterCard Tour a year later, before taking its place on the Challenge Tour for the 2000 season. Niclas Fasth
Niclas Fasth (born 29 April 1972) is a Swedish professional golfer. Early life Fasth was born in Gothenburg. In 1982, when he was 10 years old, his parents bought a summer house close to Lysegården Golf Club in Kungälv, north of Gothenburg. His family, with father Kristher, mother Inga-Lill and younger sister Jessica, used to spend their summers there and began playing golf. With a lot of friends also playing the game, young Fasth was always at the golf course, practiced a lot and showed early talent. Beside golf, Fasth practiced other sports and during winter time also showed talent in ice hockey. At 16 years of age, he was adopted at the Swedish upper secondary sports school in Mark, outside Borås, to combine studying with golf training. Celtic Manor Wales Open
The Wales Open was a professional golf tournament on the European Tour played at the Celtic Manor Resort. It was played annually from 2000 to 2014, as part of a 15-year deal between the tour and the Celtic Manor Resort, that included staging the 2010 Ryder Cup. The event was not held from 2015 to 2019 but returned in 2020, following a revamp of the European Tour because of the COVID-19 pandemic. History The 2001 event was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy rain. The third round was cancelled but organisers had hoped to play a third round on the Sunday. However, that was not possible and the result was decided over the first two rounds. Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie and Daren Lee were tied at 6-under-par and a playoff was arranged on 12th hole, a par 3, which would be played repeatedly until a winner emerged. The Madeira Islands Open was a men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour played from 1993 to 2015 on Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal. History The tournament had one of the smallest prize funds on the tour (€600,000 in 2015), and few of the tour's top players took part. Stuart Davis (golfer)
Stuart Davis (born 24 August 1973) is an English professional golfer. Davis turned professional unusually late in life, in 2001. He soon earned a place on the second-tier Challenge Tour, where he played for several years with some success, including three runner-up finishes. In 2008, he was runner-up at the Kazakhstan Open; this ultimately earned Davis a place on the European Tour for 2009 as he took the 20th and final place in the standings, thanks to a missed putt by rival Marco Ruiz.
