2008 Belarusian Premier League
The 2008 Belarusian Premier League was the 18th season of top-tier football in Belarus. It started on April 6 and ended on November 16, 2008. BATE Borisov were the defending champions. Team changes from 2007 season Due to league expansion from 14 to 16 teams the only relegated team Minsk, who finished last in 2007, was replaced by three best teams of 2007 First League: Savit Mogilev, Granit Mikashevichi and Lokomotiv Minsk. Overview BATE Borisov won their 5th champions title and qualified for the next season's Champions League. The championship runners-up Dinamo Minsk, bronze medalists MTZ-RIPO Minsk and 2008–09 Cup winners Naftan Novopolotsk qualified for the inaugural tournament of Europa League. Due to decision to gradually reduce Premiere League to 12 clubs (14 in 2009, 12 in 2010) three lowest placed teams ( Lokomotiv Minsk, Savit Mogilev and Darida Minsk Raion) relegated to the First League. Belarusian Premier League
The Belarusian Premier League or the Vyšejšaja Liha or the Vysheyshaya Liga ( be, Вышэйшая ліга, russian: Высшая лига, "Top League") is the top division of professional football in Belarus, and is organized by the Belarusian Football Federation. The number of teams in the competition has varied over the years from as high as 17 (1992–93 season) to as low as 11 (2012). As of 2016, the league included 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the course of the season. At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League, while the third worst team plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the third best team from the second tier. The top two teams from the Belarusian First League automatically win promotion to the Premier League. Gomel
Gomel (russian: Гомель, ) or Homiel ( be, Гомель, ) is the administrative centre of Gomel Region and the second-largest city in Belarus with 526,872 inhabitants (2015 census). Etymology There are at least six narratives of the origin of the city's name. The most plausible is that the name is derived from the name of the stream Homeyuk, which flowed into the river Sozh near the foot of the hill where the first settlement was founded. Names of other Belarusian cities are formed along these lines: for example, the name Minsk is derived from the river Menka, Polatsk from the river Palata, and Vitsebsk from the river Vitsba. Haradzki Stadium
Haradski Stadium ( be, Гарадскі стадыён, russian: Городской стадион; literally "City Stadium") is a multi-purpose stadium in Barysaw, Belarus. It is currently used mostly for football matches and was the home ground of BATE Borisov before they moved to the Borisov Arena in 2014. The stadium has a maximum holding capacity of 5,402 people. The stadium was opened in 1959. International use The stadium is allowed to host UEFA Champions League matches up to 3rd qualifying round and UEFA Europa League matches up to play-off round. For the later stages of both competitions, BATE Borisov had to use a bigger venue, which usually was Dinamo Stadium in Minsk. Barysaw
Barysaw ( be, Барысаў, ) or Borisov (russian: Борисов, ) is a city in Belarus near the Berezina River in the Minsk Region 74 km north-east from Minsk. Its population is around 145,000. FC Vitebsk ( be, ФК Віцебск, FK Viciebsk, russian: ФК Витебск) is a Belarusian football club based in Vitebsk. The club plays in the Belarusian Premier League, the top division in Belarusian football. Their home stadium is Vitebsky Central Sport Complex. History The club was founded in 1960 as Krasnoye Znamya Vitebsk (''Red Flag Vitebsk''). They began playing in Soviet Class B (second-tier league) the same year. FC Gomel ( be, ФК Гомель), or FK Homiel, is a Belarusian football club, playing in the city of Gomel. Their home stadium is Central Stadium. History Teams from Gomel (usually city or raion selection or railway-based team ''Lokomotiv'', but not always) played in the Belarusian SSR championships since the early 1920s. In 1946, Belorusian SSR league for one season becomes one of the zones of the USSR 3rd level league, and ''Lokomotiv Gomel'' became the first city team to play in the Soviet league. 2008–09 Belarusian Cup was the eighteenth season of the Belarusian annual cup competition. Contrary to the league season, it was conducted in a fall-spring rhythm. The first games were played on 30 July 2008. Winners of the Cup qualified for the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.
