2008 Algarve Cup
The 2008 Algarve Cup was the fifteenth edition of the Algarve Cup, an invitational women's association football, women's football tournament held annually in Portugal. It took place between 5 and 12 March 2008 with the reigning champions the United States women's national soccer team, United States winning the event for a record sixth time, after defeating Denmark women's national football team, Denmark, 2–1, in the final game in a repeat of the previous year's final. Format The twelve invited teams were split into three groups that played a round-robin tournament. The entrants were almost identical to the previous year, but Italy women's national football team, Italy moved up into Group B from their previous ranking in 2007, replacing France women's national football team, France who did not feature this time. Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir
Margrét Lára Viðarsdóttir (born 25 July 1986) is an Icelandic former footballer who played in the striker position. She is the all-time top goalscorer of the Iceland national team and competed for her country at the UEFA Women's Championships in 2009 and 2013. In a club career sometimes disrupted by injury, Margrét Lára represented ÍBV and Valur of the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild, Duisburg and Turbine Potsdam of the Frauen-Bundesliga, and Linköpings and Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan. Sandra Smisek (born 3 July 1977) is a former German footballer, who played as a striker in Germany for FSV Frankfurt, FCR Duisburg and FFC Frankfurt, as well as for the German national team. A penalty kick (commonly known as a penalty or a spot kick) is a method of restarting play in association football, in which a player is allowed to take a single shot at the goal while it is defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. It is awarded when an offence punishable by a direct free kick is committed by a player in their own penalty area. The shot is taken from the penalty mark, which is 11 m (12 yards) from the goal line and centred between the touch lines. Renate Lingor (born 11 October 1975) is a retired female German international footballer, who played as a midfielder or forward. Club career Lingor began her career in 1981 with SV Blankenloch at the age of six, in 1983 she joined the youth team of Karlsruher SC.
