The Turkmenistan Higher League, also called Türkmenistan Ýokary Liga (Turkmen: ''Türkmenistanyň Ýokary Ligasy''; Russian: ''Высшая лига Туркменистана'') is the top division of professional football in Turkmenistan, operated under the auspices of the Turkmenistan Football Federation. It was founded in 1992. 9 clubs participate in the Higher League of the Turkmenistan National Championship. The season runs between April and November. Köpetdag Aşgabat
The Köpet Dag, Kopet Dagh, or Koppeh Dagh ( tk, Köpetdag; fa, کپهداغ), also known as the Turkmen-Khorasan Mountain Range, is a mountain range on the border between Turkmenistan and Iran that extends about along the border southeast of the Caspian Sea, stretching northwest-southeast from near the Caspian Sea in the northwest to the Harirud River in the southeast. In the southwest it borders on the parallel eastern endings of the Alborz mountains being together part of the much larger Alpide belt. The highest peak of the range in Turkmenistan is the Mount Rizeh (Kuh-e Rizeh), located at the southwest of the capital Ashgabat and stands at . The highest Iranian summit is Mount Quchan (Kuh-e Quchan) with . Etymology Vambery conjectured that ''köpet'' originates from the Turkmen language where "köp" means "a lot" or "many" and the word "dag" means "mountain" or "peak". Turan Football Club ( tk, Turan futbol kluby) is a Turkmenistan, Turkmen football (soccer), football club based in Daşoguz. They play in the top division in Turkmen football, the Turkmenistan Higher League. Their home stadium is Sport toplumy (Daşoguz), Sport Toplumy Stadium. Physical culture and sports football club Merw ( tk, link=no, Merw bedenterbiýe-sport futbol kluby), also known as Merw Mary, is a Turkmen professional football club based in Mary. They play in the national top division; the Ýokary Liga. Their home stadium is Mary Stadium. Historical names *until 1966 – Lokomotiv *1967 – Murgab *1968–1989 – Garagum (Kara-Kum) *1990-until now – Merw History In 1967–1969 and 1990–1991, the team played in the Soviet Second League. The first big success of Merw FK after the collapse of the USSR came when they reached the final of the Turkmenistan Cup in 1993. In the final, they lost to Köpetdag Aşgabat with a score of 0:4. A year later, the team were the bronze prize-winner of the 1994 Ýokary Liga and took part in the preliminary round of the Asian Cup Winners' Cup 1994/95 season. Ashgabat Futbol Kluby is a Turkmen football club based in Ashgabat. They play in the top division of Turkmenistan football, Ýokary Liga. Their home stadium is Nisa Stadium. The club was first founded in 2006, they finished 3rd in their debut year under famous manager Ali Gurbani, who left the club following the home loss to Turan Dasoguz. After Rahym Gurbanmämmedow took charge, the club clinched their first title in 2007. History The first season in the Ýokary Liga FC Ashgabat started under the leadership of coach Ali Gurbani. However, in mid-season, after the defeat of the outsider FC Turan, he was dismissed. In place of Ali Gurbani came Rahym Kurbanmämmedow, with whom the club won the bronze medal in 2006.
