Pole Vault
Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level. A number of elite pole vaulters have had backgrounds in gymnastics, including world record breakers Yelena Isinbayeva and Brian Sternberg, reflecting the similar physical attributes required for the sports. Denys Sergiyovich Yurchenko ( uk, Денис Сергійович Юрченко) (born 27 January 1978 in Donetsk) is a Ukrainian pole vaulter with three medals in Indoor Athletics Championships. Career At the 2000 Summer Olympics he suffered a mishap with a vaulting pole, injuring his groin and ending his season. He also initially won the bronze medal in the men's pole vault event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. On 17 November 2016, the IOC disqualified him from the 2008 Olympic Games, stripped his Olympic bronze medal and struck his results from the record for failing a drugs test in a re-analysis of his doping sample from 2008. In May 2017, he was disqualified for two years. Michal Balner
Michal Balner (born 12 September 1982 in Opava) is a Czech athlete who specialises in the pole vault. He represented his country at the 2007 and 2013 World Championships without qualifying for the final. His best outing was the sixth place at the 2010 World Indoor Championships. His personal bests in the event are 5.82 metres outdoors (Baku 2015) and 5.76 metres indoors (Prague 2010). Germán Pablo Chiaraviglio Ermácora (born 16 April 1987 in Santa Fe) is an Argentine pole vaulter. Biography His personal best of 5.71 metres was achieved at the World Junior Championships in Beijing on August 19, 2006, when he beat the old championship record (CR) of István Bagyula from 1988, and the Argentine senior record. He also holds the South American indoors record, with 5.52 metres, and is the only Argentine athlete to conquer a gold medal in any World Championship at any category. Germán was first coached by his father within a family of pole vaulters; his brother Guillermo Jr. (in 2001) and sister Valeria (in 2005) also participated in World Junior Championships. During the 2006 South American Games, he won the gold medal (5.65 m) and his brother Guillermo silver (5.20 m).
