2007 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The 2007 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Duisburg, Germany on August 9–12, 2007 for the record-tying fourth time. The German city had hosted the championships previously in 1979, 1987, and 1995. It tied Duisburg with Belgrade, Serbia (then Yugoslavia) who hosted in 1971, 1975, 1978, and 1982. Men race as individuals, pairs and quads over 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m in both Canoe (Canadian) (C) and Kayak (K) events, giving a total of 18 gold medals. Women compete for only 9 gold medals as they race in kayak events only. This was the 36th championships in canoe sprint. Highlights Both German and Hungarian paddlers won 9 gold medals. With 6 silver Germany topped the medal table, while Hungarians finished first on the point table. In the women's events the two nations shared all world titles. Katalin Kovács (born 29 February 1976) is a Hungarian sprint canoer. She competed in the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics and won eight medals, with three golds (K-2 500 m: 2004, 2008, K-4 500 m: 2012) and five silvers (K-2 500 m: 2000, 2012, K-4 500 m: 2000, 2004, 2008). Marián Ostrčil
Marián Ostrčil (born 15 October 1980 in Bratislava) is a Slovak sprint canoer who has been competing since 1998. In 1998, in Nyköping, Sweden, he became European junior champion in the individual Canadian canoe (C-1) 500m. In 2002 he won the European under-23 championship in Zagreb, Croatia in the same event. At the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships, Ostrčil won two medals with one silver (C-1 1000 m: 2007) and one bronze (C-1 5000 m: 2010). Competing in two Summer Olympics, he earned his best finish of seventh in the C-1 1000 m event at Athens in 2004. Ostrčil is 190 cm (6'3") tall and weighs 90 kg (198 lbs). Attila Vajda
Attila Vajda (born 17 March 1983) is a Hungarian sprint canoeist who has competed since the early 2000s. Competing in three Summer Olympics (04, 08, 12) he has won two medals in the C-1 1000 m event with a gold in 2008 and a bronze in 2004. Vajda was a European junior champion in 2000, winning the Canadian canoe C-2 1000 m title with Démász-Szeged team-mate Márton Joób in Boulogne, France. In 2002 the pair came second at the European under-23 championships in Zagreb, Croatia in the same event. Hungarian coach Zoltán Angyal was confident of Vajda's ability but took the decision not to give him his senior international debut in 2002 or 2003. Andreas Dittmer
Andreas Dittmer (born 16 April 1972 in Neustrelitz, Bezirk Neubrandenburg) is a German sprint canoeist. The dominant sprint canoeist of his generation in 1000 m races, he has won three Olympic and eight world championship gold medals. Dittmer won his first world championship medal - a bronze - at Paris in 1991 as a member of Germany's C-4 500 m crew. In 1994 he won the C-2 1000 m world championship with Gunar Kirchbach. At the 1996 Olympics the pair won the gold medal in the same event. Now established as Germany's top canoe sprinter he was selected for the C-1 event and won the C-1 1000 m world title at his first attempt in Dartmouth, Canada in 1997. David Cal Figueroa (born 10 October 1982) is a Spanish sprint canoeist who has competed since 1999. Competing in three Summer Olympics, he has won five medals with a gold (C-1 1000 m: 2004 Summer Olympics) and four silvers (C-1 500 m: 2004, 2008; C-1 1000 m: 2008 and 2012; C-1 1000 m: 2012). With this latest medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games, he became the Spanish athlete with more Olympic medals of all time. Jevgenij Shuklin (born 23 November 1985 in Glazov, Russia) is a Russian-born Lithuanian sprint canoeist who has competed since 2003. Career He was world junior champion in 2003 (Japan, Komatsu). Yuriy Volodymyrovych Cheban ( uk, Юрій Володимирович Чебан; born 5 July 1986 in Odessa, Ukraine) is a retired Ukrainian sprint canoeist. He is the 2012 and 2016 Olympic champion in C-1 200 metres. Career In 2003, despite being a year younger than many of his rivals, he was a world junior silver medallist at Komatsu, Japan in the Canadian canoe C-1 1000 m and also finished fourth in the C-1 500 m event.
