Allan Cup
The Allan Cup is the trophy awarded annually to the national senior amateur men's ice hockey champions of Canada. It was donated by Sir Montagu Allan of Ravenscrag, Montreal, and has been competed for since 1909. The current champions are the Lacombe Generals, who captured the 2019 Allan Cup in Lacombe, Alberta. History In 1908, a split occurred in the competition of ice hockey in Canada. The top amateur teams left the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association, which allowed professionals, to form the new Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union (IPAHU), a purely amateur league. The trustees of the Stanley Cup decided that the Cup would be awarded to the professional ice champion, meaning there was no corresponding trophy for the amateur championship of Canada. Senior Ice Hockey
Senior hockey refers to amateur or semi-professional ice hockey competition. There are no age restrictions for Senior players, who typically consist of those whose Junior eligibility has expired. Senior hockey leagues operate under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada or USA Hockey. They are not affiliated in any way with professional hockey leagues. Many former professional players play Senior hockey after their pro careers are over. The top Senior AAA teams in Canada compete annually for the Allan Cup. History From the beginning of the 1900s until the 1970s, Senior hockey was immensely popular across Canada, particularly in rural towns. At a time when most households didn't have a television and few hockey games were broadcast, local arenas were filled to capacity to watch the local team take on a rival. Stony Plain Eagles
The Stony Plain Eagles are a senior ice hockey team based in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada. Founded in the 1930s, the team moved up to the Senior AAA ranks in 1992. They played in the Allan Cup Hockey West until 2020. The Eagles were the 1999 Allan Cup National Senior champions of Canada. History In 1987, the Eagles would win both the Alberta and Western Canada Intermediate "A" Championship, but lost the Hardy Cup Intermediate National Championship in straight games to Miramichi Gagnon Packers. From 1992 until 2003, the Eagles captured twelve consecutive Alberta Senior AAA Provincial Championships, reaching six Allan Cup finals in that time. Stony Plain, Alberta
Stony Plain is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada that is surrounded by Parkland County. It is west of Edmonton adjacent to the City of Spruce Grove and sits on Treaty 6 land. Stony Plain is known for its many painted murals representing various periods, events and people throughout the town's history. The town was originally known as Dog Rump Creek. History The name of the town is believed to have come from one of two possible origins. The first is that the Stoney people camped in the area historically. The second possibility is that Dr. James Hector, a geologist on the Palliser Expedition, noticed boulders scattered across the area. The official name for the settlement was adopted in 1892. Alex McNabb and McPherson were the first homesteaders in the area. Bentley Generals
The Lacombe Generals were a Senior AAA ice hockey team from Lacombe, Alberta, Canada that played in the Chinook Hockey League. The Generals are four-time national champions, having won the Allan Cup in 2009 and 2016 in Steinbach, Manitoba, and in 2013 in Red Deer, Alberta and in Lacombe, Alberta 2019. The club was formerly known as the Bentley Generals from 1999–2016, and played out of the Bentley Arena in Bentley, Alberta, as well as the Red Deer Arena. The team folded in 2019 due to concerns with the organization of senior hockey in Canada. History The Bentley Generals hockey club was formed in 1999 and began play in the Chinook Hockey League. Lloydminster Border Kings
The Lloydminster Border Kings were a Senior AAA ice hockey team based in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Canada. The team competed in the Wild Goose League in (at least) 2007–08, then in the Chinook Hockey League (CHL) from 2008–09. The team moved from the CHL to the Sask West Hockey League for the 2012–13 season. They moved again for the 2014–15 season, to the Battle River Hockey League (BRHL). When the BRHL folded before the 2015–16 season, the Border Kings attempted to join as many as three other leagues, being declined each time by the league officials; the team ceased operations at that time. The Border Kings captured the Allan Cup – Canada's national senior championship – in 2001 and 2007. Shawinigan () is a city located on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie area in Quebec, Canada. It had a population of 49,349 as of the 2016 Canadian census. Whitby Dunlops
The Whitby Dunlops are a Canadian senior ice hockey team in the team in the Allan Cup Hockey league. The team began play in 2004, and is on a leave of absence as of the 2020-21 season. Two previous teams have also played as the Whitby Dunlops. The first played in the OHA Senior A League (1890-1979), OHA Senior A League from 1954 to 1960, winners of the 1958 World Ice Hockey Championships. The second was a junior ice hockey team for the 1962–63 season.
