2006–07 Sunderland A.F.C. Season
The 2006–07 season was the 112th full season in Sunderland A.F.C.'s history and their 106th in the league system of English football. After recording a record low total of 15 points in the 2005–06 season, Sunderland finished bottom of the league and were relegated to the Football League Championship. Background Sunderland began the 2005–06 season with Mick McCarthy as manager, having been promoted as champions the previous season. Before the start of the season, McCarthy recruited Daryl Murphy, Nyron Nosworthy, Jonathan Stead, Kelvin Davis, Tommy Miller, Martin Woods, Alan Stubbs, Joe Murphy and Andy Gray. Their first match back in the Premier League came against Charlton Athletic where they were beaten 3–1. Sunderland's first victory of the season came in the Tees-Wear derby, when goals from Tommy Miller and Julio Arca saw them to a 2–0 victory. Sunderland () is a port city in Tyne and Wear, England. It is the City of Sunderland's administrative centre and in the Historic counties of England, historic county of County of Durham, Durham. The city is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is on the River Wear's mouth to the North Sea. The river also flows through Durham, England, Durham roughly south-west of Sunderland City Centre. It is the only other city in the county and the second largest settlement in the North East England, North East after Newcastle upon Tyne. Locals from the city are sometimes known as Mackems. Daryl Murphy
Daryl Michael Murphy (born 15 March 1983) is an Irish former professional footballer. Murphy began his career at Waterford United, having previously played youth football for Waterford based side Southend United and English side Luton Town, whilst also spending a brief spell on loan at Harrow Borough in 2002. After a three year spell at Waterford he signed for Sunderland in 2005. Murphy went on to make over 100 appearances for Sunderland, whilst also spending time out on loan with Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town, before joining Scottish side Celtic in 2010. He spent much of his time at Celtic on loan at former loan club Ipswich Town, where he spent two consecutive season on loan before making the move permanent in June 2013. Fulham () is an area of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham in West London, England, southwest of Charing Cross. Kevin Ball
Kevin Ball (born 12 November 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played for Portsmouth, Sunderland, Fulham and Burnley. Since his retirement, he has held a number of positions at Sunderland, including twice being caretaker manager, and has recently retired from working as club ambassador. Playing career Born in Hastings, Ball began his career in central defence but eventually moved into central midfield. He played 389 games for Sunderland in all competitions, scoring 27 goals. His career took off with a spell at Portsmouth and, after leaving Sunderland, he had spells at Fulham and Burnley. Whilst at Sunderland, he played in the 1992 FA Cup Final where they lost 2–0 to Liverpool. Julio Arca
Julio Andrés Arca (born 31 January 1981) is an Argentine former professional footballer, who played as a left-back or central midfielder. Arca spent the majority of his career in the North East of England, firstly for Sunderland from 2000 to 2006, and then for Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2013. He retired from professional football following his release from Middlesbrough, and subsequently played Sunday League football for Willow Pond for the 2014–15 season. He later signed for South Shields, in addition to his return to Sunderland as part of the club's youth coaching staff. Andy Gray (footballer, Born 1977)
Andrew David Gray (born 15 November 1977) is a former professional footballer who last managed Leeds United's under-18 team. He is the son of the former Scotland defender Frank Gray and nephew of Leeds United legend Eddie Gray. His cousin Stuart Gray was also a pro footballer. His son Archie is a young professional at Leeds United. Andy Gray started his career as a midfield player but later moved into a forward position. Joe Murphy (footballer, Born 1981)
Joseph Murphy (born 21 August 1981) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Tranmere Rovers. Murphy began his career with Tranmere Rovers, and has since represented eight other clubs, making over 500 appearances in the Football League and playing twice in the Premier League for West Bromwich Albion in 2002. Born in Dublin, he was capped twice by the Republic of Ireland at international level in 2003 and 2010.
