2006 Thomas Cup
The 2006 Thomas & Uber Cup was held from 28 April to 7 May in Sendai and Tokyo, Japan. It was the 24th tournament of Thomas Cup and 21st tournament of Uber Cup, men's and women's badminton tournaments. Sendai hosted all of the group stage and play-off matches while Tokyo hosted the event starting from the quarter finals until the final. This was first time the Thomas & Uber Cup was played with a three-game 21-point scoring system. China emerged as champions of both tournaments after beating Denmark and Netherlands in the men's and women's competitions respectively. Host city selection Japan, which was competing with Indonesia and the United States for hosting the 2004 Thomas and Uber Cup finals, was awarded with this event. Sendai Gymnasium
is an indoor sporting arena located in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan. The capacity of the arena is 7,000. It hosted preliminary round games for the Basketball World Championship 2006, and is also the home arena of the Sendai 89ers of the Japan professional basketball B.League. In 1994 and 2004, it hosted the Asian Basketball Championship for Women. Japan National Badminton Team
The Japan national badminton team represents Japan in international badminton team competitions. The Japanese women's team have won the Uber Cup 6 times, with their most recent being the 2018 Uber Cup. The men's team won their first Thomas Cup title in 2014. The mixed team were runners-up three times at the Sudirman Cup. Taufik Hidayat
Taufik Hidayat (born 10 August 1981) is an Indonesian retired badminton player. He is a former World, Olympic, Asian Games, and Asian champion, and the youngest world number one in the men's singles. Hidayat has won the Indonesia Open six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006). Career summary When he was young, he joined the SGS club, a badminton club in Bandung, where he trained under Iie Sumirat. Lin Dan (born 14 October 1983) is a Chinese former professional badminton player. He is a two-time Olympic champion, five-time World champion, as well as a six-time All England champion. The Malaysia national badminton team is a badminton team that plays for Malaysia in international competitions. The men's team has enjoyed immense success, having won the Thomas Cup five times, most recently in 1992 and became runner-up nine times. The Indonesia national badminton team represents Indonesia in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Badminton Association of Indonesia, the governing body for badminton in Indonesia.
