St Kilda Football Club
The St Kilda Football Club, nicknamed the Saints, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Victoria. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier league. The club's name originates from its original home base in the bayside Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, Victoria, St Kilda in which the club was established in 1873. The club also has strong links to the south-eastern suburb of Moorabbin, Victoria, Moorabbin, due to it being the long-standing location of their training ground. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990. The league currently consists of 18 teams spread over five of Australia's six states (Tasmania being the exception). Raphael Clarke
Raphael Clarke (born 24 September 1985) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 2004 to 2012. His brother Xavier Clarke also played for St Kilda. AFL career Clarke was recruited from Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) club St Mary's with pick Number Eight in the 2003 AFL Draft. He made his debut in Round 17, 2004 against Essendon and was an AFL Rising Star nominee in 2005. 2008 season Clarke had a strong start to the year in his fifth season at St Kilda, playing in their 2008 NAB Cup winning side. After playing just five of the first 20 rounds in 2008 because of health and personal issues, Clarke finished the year in outstanding fashion, starring at half-back in the semi-final win against Collingwood and being one of the Saints' few good players in the preliminary final loss to Hawthorn. Jason Gram
Jason Gram (born 27 April 1984) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who previously played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Junior Career As a junior with Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup, Gram quit football for basketball with a view to making the elite level in that sport. It took one phone call from the Power coach of the day, dual Essendon premiership player Darren Bewick, to reverse his decision. AFL Career with Brisbane Gram was drafted by the Brisbane Lions as the 19th pick in the 2001 AFL Draft. But in two years, both of which culminated in Lions' premierships, Gram was chosen for only two games, amounting to 20 minutes of total playing time. Brett Voss
Brett Charles Voss (born 22 February 1978) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Lions and the St Kilda Football Club. He was drafted by the Brisbane Bears as a zone selection in 1995. Voss, now with the Lions, made his debut in 1997 but was delisted at the end of 2000, struggling to gain selection in a successful Brisbane side, and over-shadowed by his older brother, Brownlow Medallist Michael Voss. The St Kilda Football Club, under the leadership of then coach Malcolm Blight, recruited Voss in the 2001 pre-season draft. His 2001 season with the club was inconsistent, but he played 19 matches and found some confidence. It was in 2002 that Voss came into his own as an AFL footballer. Leigh Montagna
Leigh “Joey” Montagna (; born 2 November 1983) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A two time All-Australian, Montagna finished his career 7th on the all-time games list for St Kilda with 287 games and was top three in St Kilda's best and fairest—the Trevor Barker Award—on five occasions. AFL career 2002–2006 Montagna was recruited from the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup under-18s as the number-37 draft pick in round 2 of the 2001 AFL draft by St Kilda. Steven Baker (Australian Footballer)
Steven Paul Baker (born 22 May 1980) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1999 to 2011. AFL career Baker was drafted in the 1998 AFL Draft at pick 27 in a second round pick to the St Kilda Football Club. Baker played in St Kilda’s 2004 Wizard Home Loans Cup winning side – St Kilda's second pre-season cup win. Max Hudghton
Max Kenneth Hudghton (born 2 September 1976 in Victoria, Australia) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League. Selected at pick 15 in the 1996 AFL Draft, Hudghton was a debutant who made his name in the St Kilda Football Club's 1997 season. Hudghton played in 14 of 22 matches in the 1997 AFL Premiership Season home and away rounds in which St Kilda Football Club qualified in first position for the 1997 AFL Finals Series, winning the club’s 2nd Minor Premiership and 1st McClelland Trophy. Lenny Hayes
Lenny Hayes (born 14 January 1980) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1999 to 2014. He is currently an assistant coach at the St Kilda Football Club. Growing up in Sydney, Hayes played TAC Cup football for the NSW/ACT Rams. He was recruited by St Kilda with the 11th pick in the 1998 National Draft and made his senior debut in round five of the 1999 season. He was nominated for the AFL Rising Star Award later in the year as well. Hayes was a first-choice player for St Kilda for virtually his whole career, other than in two seasons (2006 and 2011) where he would require knee reconstructions. After playing 297 games and kicking 95 goals, he retired at the end of the 2014 season. Hayes would establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the league. Leigh Fisher
Leigh Fisher (born 19 April 1984) is an Australian rules football umpire and former player in the Australian Football League (AFL). Playing career Fisher was recruited as the number 46 draft pick in the 2002 AFL Draft from Sandringham. He made his debut for St Kilda in 2003 against the West Coast Eagles in Round 18. Fisher went on to become a regular fixture in the Saints' best 22 playing as a small defender in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, Fisher played in St Kilda's 2008 NAB Cup winning side – the club's third preseason win. However, he fell out of favour in the 2008 season. His last game for the Saints was in Round 11, 2008 against the Western Bulldogs. He did not play a game in 2009 and on 13 November 2009 Fisher was delisted by St Kilda. Fergus Watts
Fergus Watts (born 21 September 1985) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club and the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Watts was a forward line player. He later went on to form Bastion Collective, reportedly the largest independent marketing agency in Australia. Watts serves as the company's executive chairman. Andrew Thompson (AFL)
Andrew Charles Thompson (born 21 October 1972) is a retired Australian rules footballer for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League. Thompson was recruited in the 1996 AFL Draft at pick no 62 and was picked up from the VAFA club Old Melburnians. At the time of his recruitment Thompson was 24 years of age, relatively old for an AFL footballer to begin his career. Thompson later said that being recruited at a late age allowed him to become more travelled and worldly than other footballers who begin their careers at 17 or 18 years of age. Thompson quickly established himself in the St Kilda line-up in 1997, missing only two games (in Rounds 2 and 3) and playing every game from Round 4 onwards, including St Kilda's loss in the Grand Final.
