2006 Major League Lacrosse Season
The 2006 Major League Lacrosse season was the sixth season of the league. The season began on May 20 and concluded with the championship game on August 27, 2006. General information The season marked the first expansion teams in the MLL. Chicago Machine, Denver Outlaws, Los Angeles Riptide and San Francisco Dragons made up the new Western Conference. The original six teams formed the Eastern Conference. New Jersey moved its home games to Yurcak Field and Rochester moved its home games to PAETEC Park. On April 21, MLL announced a trade involving six teams and 24 players and draft picks. MLL believes it to be the largest trade in sports history. The June 29 game between Boston at Philadelphia was called with 13:00 remaining in the fourth quarter due to a lightning storm. Boston won the game 16-5. Major League Lacrosse
Major League Lacrosse (MLL) was a men's field lacrosse league in the United States. The league's inaugural season was in 2001. Teams played anywhere from ten to 16 games in a summertime regular season. This was followed by a four-team playoff for the championship trophy, the Steinfeld Trophy, named after founder Jake Steinfeld. League attendance peaked at 6,417 in 2011 and the 2019 average was 4,587. The Chesapeake Bayhawks and New York Lizards (originally the Baltimore Bayhawks and Long Island Lizards) were MLL members throughout its existence and competed in the first three championship games, with the Lizards winning two. The Boston Cannons, the last of the six charter franchises to remain in their original market with their original name, won their first championship in 2011. Brodie Merrill
Brodie Merrill (born November 5, 1981) is a Canadian professional lacrosse player. He currently plays in the National Lacrosse League for the San Diego Seals and Premier Lacrosse League for the Cannons. Merrill is recognized by the Premier Lacrosse League as having revolutionized the LSM position, and is the namesake for the Brodie Merrill LSM of the Year Award, being the only active PLL player to have an award named after them. High school career Merrill attended the Salisbury School in Connecticut. While attending Salisbury, he was a standout lacrosse player, and was named the New England Defensive Player of the Year, was selected to the All-New England team, and was selected as a First Team High School All-American. Tony Resch
Tony Resch is a retired lacrosse player, and current field and box lacrosse coach. He is the former head coach of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League from 1994 to 2001, and led the Wings to four Championships. Resch was named to the NLL Hall of Fame in 2008. Resch returned to coaching as the head coach of the Philadelphia Barrage of Major League Lacrosse. Resch graduated from Yale University, where he was a two-time All-American and three-time First Team All-Ivy League player. Resch also won a gold medal in the 1990 World Lacrosse Championship held in Perth, Australia as a member of Team USA. He is currently a guidance counselor at La Salle College High School, in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. Matt Ward (lacrosse Player)
Matt Ward (born March 30, 1983) is an American lacrosse player who played at the University of Virginia and played for the Washington Bayhawks (currently the Chesapeake Bayhawks). He is also a member of the #CPMC (Classic Pure Michigan Classic). Ryan Powell (lacrosse)
Ryan Powell (born February 23, 1978 in West Carthage, New York) is a four-time All-American lacrosse player at Syracuse University and was on the US national team roster in 2006 and 2010. Background Powell did not begin playing organized lacrosse until he was in the seventh grade. He is the second oldest in the family behind his brother Casey Powell, and older than Michael Powell. Powell attended Carthage Senior High School where he was the quarterback for the football team and played on the lacrosse team. In 1996, Powell chose to attend Syracuse University, following his brother Casey. At Syracuse, he was a four-time All-American (his brother Casey was also a four-time All-American). After his college career he was drafted third in the 2000 MLL draft.
