The 19th European Athletics Championships were held in Gothenburg, Sweden, between 7 August and 13 August 2006. The competition arena was the Ullevi Stadium and the official motto "Catch the Spirit". Magdelín Martínez Castillo (; born February 10, 1976, in Camagüey, Cuba) is a Cuban-born female triple jumper, competing internationally for Italy. Biography She originally represented Cuba. She won the bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. She jumped 14.27 metres in 1998 and 14.40 metres in 2000. She met future husband, Giuseppe Piccotti, while he was holidaying in the Caribbean. When he fell ill, she was quick to supply him with medicine, and it all went from there. After moving to Italy she wanted to take up jumping again but even though she was jumping personal bests she felt a little closed off from her colleagues, and accepted with good spirits that she would have to become an Italian. She naturalised in July 2001 and competed for Italy at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton. She finished fourth, having set a personal best of 14.59 metres in the qualification. The European Athletics Championships is a biennial event (since 2010), which began in 1934. European Athletics accepts only athletes who are representing one of the organisation's European member states and the body recognises records set at editions of the European Athletics Championships. The Championships records in athletics are the best marks set in competitions at the event. Simona La Mantia (born 14 April 1983 in Palermo) is an Italian triple jumper. Her best result at international senior level was a gold medal at the 2011 European Indoor Championships. Biography La Mantia's parents were both athletes: her mother Monica Mutschlechner was an 800 metres runner while her father Antonino La Mantia participated in the steeplechase. Her first successes came the European Athletics U23 Championships, where she won silver in the triple jump in 2003, and improved to win the gold medal in 2005. Dana Velďáková (born 3 June 1981 in Rožňava, Czechoslovakia) is a former Slovak athlete specialising in the triple jump. Zita Ajkler (born 9 June 1975) is a Hungarian long jumper. She is a 16-time Hungarian national champion in the long jump, triple jump, heptathlon, and 100-meter hurdles. Her personal best is 676 cm in the long jump and 13.99 m in the triple jump (the national record is 14.00 m); 13.75 s in 100-meter hurdles (wind-1.2), 8.35 s in 60-meter hurdles, and 5,323 points in the heptathlon. Ajkler began by pole vaulting recreationally, achieved 360 cm in training after 3 months of practice, but never competed in this event.
