The 2006 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol de la Serie A (known as the 2006 Copa Pílsener Serie A for sponsorship reasons) was the 48th season of Ecuador's Serie A, the country's top football tournament for the country's top league. El Nacional won their 13th title to tie Barcelona for the most top-flight championships in Ecuadorian football history. Format The Serie A returned to its year-long format this season. The tournament was composed of three stages. The First Stage and Second Stage are identical. The ten teams competed in a double round-robin tournament, one game at home and one away. The top three teams in each stage qualified to the Liguilla Final with bonus points (3, 2, and 1 point respectively). The Liga Pro Betcris, simply known as the Liga Pro, or the Serie A, is a professional football league in Ecuador. At the top of the Ecuadorian football league system, it is the country's premier football competition. Contested by sixteen clubs, it operates a system of promotion and relegation with the Serie B, the lower level of the Primera Categoría. The season runs from February to December and is usually contested in multiple stages. The main sponsor is Betcris and it is known as Liga Pro Betcris. Club Centro Deportivo Olmedo is an Ecuadorian professional football club based in Riobamba, Ecuador. They play in the Serie B. The club won their only national championship in 2000. Their achievement made them the first club outside Quito and Guayaquil to win a national championship. They have also won two Serie B titles in 1994 and 2003.
