2006 ABA All-Star Game
The 2006 American Basketball Association All-Star Game was held in Sunrise, Florida at the 20,737 seat BankAtlantic Center on February 11, 2006, where East defeated West, 129–127. Former NBA player Armen Gilliam who came out of retirement in 2005 to play for the Pittsburgh Xplosion, was named the Most Valuable Player, though the main attraction of the All-Star Game was Tim Hardaway who had already participated in 5 NBA All-Star Games in his career. Prior to the game, Randy Gill won the 3-Point Shootout, and Ray Cunningham won the Slam Dunk Contest. Both teams were coached by former NBA players. The East team was coached by Greg Graham of the Indiana Alley Cats, while the West team was coached Gary Grant of the SoCal Legends. Chinese players Huang Haibei and Sun Yue of Beijing Aoshen Olympian were the only non-Americans of the event. The American Basketball Association (ABA) was a major men's professional basketball league from 1967 to 1976. The ABA ceased to exist with the American Basketball Association–National Basketball Association merger in 1976, leading to four ABA teams joining the National Basketball Association (NBA) and to the introduction of the 3-point shot in the NBA in 1979. Montreal Matrix
The Montreal Matrix were an American Basketball Association team based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The team's first season was in 2005–06 and their home court was the Centre Pierre Charbonneau. The team was known as the Montreal Royal during the 2007–08 season, before returning to its original name. History The Matrix reached the playoffs in their first season of play. They won their first playoff game against the Ohio Aviators. They reached the Round of 16 before losing to the Maryland Nighthawks. Manix Auriantal
Manix Auriantal (born August 8, 1980) is a Rwandan-Canadian retired professional basketball player and is now actively dedicated to the next generation of Canadian athletes. He currently runs a basketball programme for Louis-Joseph Papineau high school in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Auriantal has played for several teams from his hometown since graduating from the New York Institute of Technology in 2004. He has represented Rwanda in international competition, and played for them at the AfroBasket 2007. Collegiate career Auriantal first attended Dawson College in Westmount, Quebec. He then transferred to the Globe Institute of Technology in New York City, United States. Buffalo Rapids
The Buffalo Sharks were a professional basketball team in the American Basketball Association based in Buffalo, New York. The team played two seasons as the Buffalo Rapids and Buffalo Silverbacks before suspending operations. This team is not to be confused with the Buffalo Stampede of the Premier Basketball League. History Buffalo Rapids (2005–06) The Buffalo Rapids were founded by Gary Nice and began play in the fall of 2005 as part of the ABA's Connie Hawkins Division. Tim Winn (born June 27, 1977) is an American former basketball player. He played for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies from 1996 to 2000 and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team in his senior year. The Washington GreenHawks were a team of the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) based in Washington, D.C. Lawrence Edward Moten (born March 25, 1972) is an American retired professional basketball player. Moten attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. and the New Hampton School in New Hampton, New Hampshire before playing his college ball at Syracuse University. Playing as a guard/forward, he is the career scoring leader for that school with 2,334 points and graduated as the Big East Conference's all-time leading scorer with 1,405 points, ahead of Troy Bell ( BC – 1,388 pts), Terry Dehere ( SHU – 1,320 pts), and Chris Mullin ( SJU – 1,290 pts). Armon Gilliam
Armen Louis Gilliam (born Armon Louis Gilliam; May 28, 1964 – July 5, 2011) was an American professional basketball player who played 13 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1987 to 2000. He also played one season for the Pittsburgh Xplosion of the American Basketball Association. Gilliam returned to the court after retirement as the head basketball coach for the (NCAA) Division III Penn State Altoona Lions from 2002 to 2005. College career Gilliam began his college basketball career in 1982–83 at Independence Junior College in Independence, Kansas. The Miami Majesty was a team of the Continental Basketball Association based in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The team was formerly the Florida Pit Bulls, a member of the American Basketball Association, and played their home games in the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The team, coached by Miami Heat legend Tim Hardaway (who also part-owned and played for the team, hoping to go back to playing for the Miami Heat someday), compiled a record of 19-8 (good for first place in the Barnes-Malone division) in the regular season, despite hurricanes cancelling games and almost wiping out their division.
