2005 Storm In Uruguay
In 2005, a heavy storm swept across southern Uruguay from 23 to 24 August. The storm started at the River Plate, entered Uruguayan territory at Kiyú (San José) and moved towards Juanicó (Canelones), where it died down. This storm produced strong winds which exceeded 187 km/h. Destruction was severe in the affected cities in Uruguay and Argentina. Aftermath Meteorologists considered this to be an extratropical cyclone. Many years later, Uruguayan people keep commenting this cyclone as the worst they remember. The 2005 storm is widely regarded as the worst disaster to befall Uruguay in recent years, even prompting United Nations intervention. Santa Rosa Storm
The Santa Rosa Storm occurs in the Southern Hemisphere up to fifteen days earlier than or fifteen days later than the festival of Santa Rosa of Lima, Peru, celebrated on August 30 each year. Legend has it that Isabel Flores de Oliva, also known as Rosa de Lima, caused a mighty storm which prevented Dutch pirates from attacking the city of Lima in 1615. However, meteorologists attribute the storm to the clash of the first warm winds, which are a product of the arrival of spring with cold fronts. The Departamento de Canelones ( es, Departamento de Canelones; ) is one of the 19 uruguayan departments. With an area of and 518,154 inhabitants, it is located in the south of Uruguay. In 2012, a strong storm swept across southern Uruguay from 18 to 19 September. Facts The main area affected were the departments on the River Plate and Atlantic coasts: Colonia, San José, Montevideo, Canelones, Maldonado, Rocha. The strongest winds were in Punta del Este (172 km/h), Montevideo (122 km/h), Laguna del Sauce (120 km/h), Colonia (103 km/h), San José (102 km/h), Melo (98 km/h), Tacuarembó (87 km/h), Rivera (83 km/h). The government was forced to close public buildings, suspend transport and recommend residents in the capital Montevideo and other locations along the coast to remain at home.
