2005 Kazakh Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on 4 December 2005. Incumbent president Nursultan Nazarbayev, in power since 1989, sought and won a 3rd term against four other candidates. Opposition candidates were allowed some access to the mass media, but this was still restricted. According to western election observers, opposition candidates also suffered considerable harassment. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) criticized the elections, calling them unfair, but noted improvements. Background On 22 June 2000, the Constitutional Council ruled that the President Nursultan Nazarbayev who was reelected in 1999 for second term, was in fact serving his first term due to the newly adopted Kazakhstan Constitution in 1995, which happened before his reelection bid. Percentage Point
A percentage point or percent point is the unit (measurement), unit for the Difference (mathematics), arithmetic difference between two percentages. For example, moving up from 40 percent to 44 percent is an increase of 4 percentage points, but a 10-percent increase in the quantity being measured. In literature, the unit is usually either written out, or abbreviated as ''pp'' or ''p.p.'' to avoid ambiguity. After the first occurrence, some writers abbreviate by using just "point" or "points". The Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan ( kk, Қазақстан Республикасының Орталық сайлау комиссиясы, OSK; ) is a state body in Kazakhstan, which heads the unified system of electoral commissions. History The OSK was originally formed on 22 September 1989 as the Central Election Commission for Elections and Recall of People's Deputies of the Kazakh SSR by the Resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR. It was consisted of 25 people. By the Decree of the President of Kazakhstan of No. 3205, the current Regulation on the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan was approved on 11 November 1996. Ak Zhol Democratic Party
The Aq Jol Democratic Party ( kz, Ақ жол Демократиялық Партиясы, translit=Aq Jol Demokratialyq Partiasy, russian: Демократическая партия Казахстана «Ак жол», Demokraticheskaya partiya Kazakhstana «Ak zhol»), commonly referred to simply as Aq Jol ( kz, Ақ жол, translit=Aq Jol, lit=Bright Path), is a liberal-conservative political party in Kazakhstan. Alikhan Baimenov
Alikhan Muhamediauly Baimenov ( kk, Әлихан Мұхамедияұлы Бәйменов, ''Älihan Mūhamediiaūly Bäimenov''; born 25 March 1959) is a Kazakh politician who served as a member of the Mazhilis from October 2006 to June 2007, chairman of Ak Zhol Democratic Party from March 2005 to July 2011 to which he was a nominee of in the 2005 Kazakh presidential election. Communist People's Party Of Kazakhstan
The People's Party of Kazakhstan (abbr. QHP),, NPK originally the Communist People's Party of Kazakhstan (QKHP),, KNPK is a left-wing political party in Kazakhstan, currently led by Ermūhamet Ertısbaev. The Secretaries of the Central Committee are Turgyn Syzdyqov, Gauhar Nugmanova, Viktor Smirnov and Jambyl Ahmetbekov. The party was registered on 21 June 2004.
