2005 KMT Chairmanship Election
The 2005 Kuomintang chairmanship election () was held on July 16, 2005 in Taiwan between Ma Ying-jeou and Wang Jin-pyng. The election was triggered by the retirement of chairman Lien Chan. This was the second direct election of the chairman in Kuomintang history. All registered, due-paying KMT party members were eligible to vote. Previous leaders of the KMT had been elected by the party congress in a one-man race (with the candidate being either the incumbent or his designated successor). Lien ran unopposed in 2001, but his election was decided by rank and file party members. Lien retired without naming a successor, choosing to retain a direct election for the office of chairman. The election was widely seen as a preliminary contest for the party's nomination in the 2008 presidential election. Mainland Chinese
Mainland Chinese or Mainlanders are Chinese people who live in or have recently emigrated from mainland China, defined as the territory governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) except for Hong Kong ( SAR of the PRC), Macau (SAR of the PRC), and the partly-PRC-controlled South China Sea Islands (uninhabited and disputed), and also excluding certain territories that are claimed by the PRC but not controlled, namely Taiwan aka the "Republic of China" (ROC), which is a state with limited recognition, and other associated territories that are ruled by Taiwan (namely Fujian Province (ROC) and the Taiwan-ruled South China Sea Islands). Lee Ching-hua
Lee Ching-hua (; born 3 December 1948) is a Taiwanese politician. Family and education Lee Ching-hua was born on 3 December 1948, the second child to Lee Huan and Pan Hsiang-ning. He had one older brother, Lee Ching-chung, and two younger sisters, Lee Ching-chu and Diane Lee. Lee Ching-hua earned a bachelor's degree in law from National Chengchi University before furthering his education in the United States, where he obtained a doctorate in history from New York University. Lee then returned to Taiwan and became an associate professor at NCCU. Political career Lee was elected to the Legislative Yuan for the first time in 1992. He, Chen Kuei-miao, and others broke away from the Kuomintang to found the New Party the next year. John Chiang (Taiwan)
Chiang Hsiao-yen (; born 1 March 1942) or John Chiang, formerly surnamed Chang (), is a Taiwanese politician affiliated with the Kuomintang. He is the speculated illegitimate son of Chiang Ching-kuo, former leader of the Republic of China, which would make him the grandson of Chiang Kai-shek. Biography He and his identical twin brother, Winston Chang, both illegitimate, are believed to have been born the sons of Chiang Ching-kuo and his mistress Chang Ya-juo at public hospital in Guilin. Since they were born out of wedlock, the twins took their mother's surname, Chang, though they were given the Chiang generation name () shared by all the grandchildren of Chiang Kai-shek, including Chiang Ching-kuo's legitimate children. Lee Huan (; 8 February 19172 December 2010) was a Taiwanese politician. He was Premier of the Republic of China from 1989 to 1990, serving for one year under former President Lee Teng-hui. He was the father of Lee Ching-hua and Diane Lee. He was born in Hankou, Hubei. Early life and education He received his Bachelor of Laws at Fudan University and his Master of Arts in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Chen Shui-bian
Chen Shui-bian (; born 12 October 1950) is a retired Taiwanese politician and lawyer who served as the president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2000 to 2008. Chen was the first president from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which ended the Kuomintang's (KMT) 55 years of continuous rule in Taiwan. He is colloquially referred to as A-Bian (阿扁). A lawyer, Chen entered politics in 1980 during the Kaohsiung Incident as a member of the Tangwai movement and was elected to the Taipei City Council in 1981.
